Mission and objectives

UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, is a voluntary-funded international organization with a presence in over 150 countries, including Nepal. UNFPA is guided by the Programme of Action of the 1994 Cairo International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) and the Sustainable Development Goals. Its mission is to ensure that every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe and every young person’s potential is fulfilled.

The work of UNFPA is based on the premise that all human beings are entitled to equal rights and protections. We focus on women and young people because these are groups whose ability to exercise their right to sexual and reproductive health is often compromised. Our work is informed by an understanding of population dynamics, human rights and cultural sensitivity.

Context

UNFPA has been operating in Nepal since 1971, partnering with federal, provincial, and local governments, civil society organizations, and development partners to ensure equitable access to sexual and reproductive health services, especially for women, adolescents, and marginalized groups. The current Ninth Country Programme (2023–2027) is aligned with Nepal’s national development priorities, the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) Programme of Action, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women CEDAW), the UNFPA Strategic Plan (2022–2025), and the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation

The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme is administered by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). 2
Framework (UNSDCF 2023–2027).
UNFPA Nepal’s approach integrates rights-based, gender-transformative strategies and focuses on strengthening health systems, enhancing demand for services among vulnerable populations, mainstreaming gender and population dynamics into development planning, and ensuring timely and effective humanitarian response.

Through its work, UNFPA contributes to building a more inclusive, equitable, and resilient society, leaving no one behind.
Under UNFPA’s mandate to ensure rights and choices for all, communication is a vital instrument to advocate for sexual and reproductive health and rights, influence policy, and mobilize action. Through compelling storytelling and strong visual and digital content, communication brings to life UNFPA’s mission to deliver a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe, and every young person’s potential is fulfilled.
High-quality multimedia materials are essential to showcase the realities faced by women, girls and young people, amplify their voices, and document UNFPA’s work in protecting their health, safety and dignity. The Communications team ensures that donor and government contributions are recognized through the creation of engaging and brand-compliant content which include stories, videos, photographs, infographics, reports and visibility materials that highlight impact, foster trust, and advance UNFPA’s global mandate.
