UNFPA MDV organization mission TBD

Context

This UNV assignment is part of UNFPA Maldives Country Office’s project to address Female Genital Mutilation or Cutting (FGM/C) in the Maldives, funded by DFAT, recognizing it as a severe violation of human rights and a form of gender-based violence with devastating health consequences. While often associated with other regions, FGM/C is reported in the Maldives, with the Maldives Demographic Health Survey 2016-17 revealing that 13% of women aged 15-49 have undergone the practice, although prevalence has declined over time, increasing significantly with age. Recognizing that FGM/C is a complex phenomenon at the intersection of culture, gender equality, and health, requiring political leadership and commitment at all levels, this project aims to tackle the issue through a holistic, gender-transformative, and multi-sectoral approach.

The main objective is to build a national multi-stakeholder partnership to address FGM/C in the Maldives, leveraging learning from global and regional initiatives to create a safe and supportive platform for advocacy and collaboration.
