Overview of position

The Senior Mechanic is responsible for leading and executing high-level maintenance and repair activities for heavy-duty vehicles and machinery. Working both hands-on and in a supervisory capacity, the position focuses on diagnosing complex mechanical issues, carrying out precise repairs, and ensuring all equipment operates safely and efficiently. The role provides technical leadership to mechanics, guiding them in best practices and fostering a strong safety and quality culture.

A key part of the role involves developing and managing preventive maintenance schedules to reduce breakdowns and extend the lifespan of vehicles. The position also ensures that all work aligns with industry standards and internal quality benchmarks, supported by accurate reporting and documentation. Additionally, the role oversees parts and tool inventory to ensure maintenance activities are well-resourced and efficient.

The position supervises the mechanic team's daily routines which include routine servicing, major and minor repairs, component overhauls, electrical and HVAC system maintenance, parts replacement, body repairs, and full vehicle assessments to recommend further work. Overall, the role ensures the smooth, effective, and safe operation of the workshop and fleet.

Role objectives

·Advanced Diagnostics & Repairs: Utilize specialized tools and equipment to diagnose and repair complex mechanical issues in heavy-duty vehicles and machinery.

·Team Leadership & Training: Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior mechanics, fostering a culture of continuous learning and adherence to safety standards.

·Preventive Maintenance: Develop and implement comprehensive maintenance schedules to prevent equipment failures and extend vehicle lifespan.

·Quality Assurance: Ensure all repair and maintenance tasks meet the highest standards of quality and safety, in compliance with industry regulations.

·Inventory Management: Oversee the management of tools, spare parts, and equipment, ensuring availability and proper usage to support maintenance activities.

·Reporting & Documentation: Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, repairs, and inspections, providing detailed reports to management.

·Supervise the routines below for the mechanic team :

×Routine / periodic maintenance of all client vehicles

×Periodic overhauling of all vehicles thus Engine, toolbox etc.

×Major & minor repairing including denting, panting, bumper, dashboard etc.

×Electrical, Heating and air conditioning works.

×Changes and supply of new Air-filter, Break, Mobile, fuel and other minor works.

×Major and minor servicing 

×General assessment of cars to recommend repairs

This role reports to the Workshop Supervisor

Key competencies

Education: Diploma /certificate in related field of mechanics & certified certificate of driving 

Experience: minimum 7 years’ working experience in a motor garage

Geographical experience: Context of South Sudan and Africa 

Languages: English is essential, Arabic is an added advantage 

Key competencies: 

Diagnostic and repair skills: proficiency in diagnosing and repairing the ignition, steering, suspension, charging, and hydraulic braking systems.

Technical Skills: both manual and new technologies emerging 

Ability to work as part of a team and autonomously

Product knowledge and familiarity in different motor brands like Toyota, Honda , among others 

Communication skills: being able to communicate with both your customers and colleagues is a crucial skill

Professionalism and ability to maintain relationships with clients with proper work ethics.

Leadership and supervision skills with the ability to build and empower teams, conflict resolution and report submission.

Team management
