Mission and objectives
The mandate of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) is to promote sustainable and inclusive development and regional connectivity in the Asian and Pacific region. ESCAP’s role as a regional development arm of the United Nations Secretariat is to support its membership with policy-oriented research and analysis, normative support and technical assistance and capacity building, to respond to the development priorities and changing needs of the Asian and Pacific region.
Context
The Pact for the Future highlights youth and innovation as essential drivers of sustainable progress. Young people inherit urgent global challenges but also bring fresh perspectives, digital fluency, and the creativity to design new solutions. Innovation—whether technological or social—thrives when youth are empowered as partners, not just beneficiaries. Their voices are vital to advancing climate action, digital cooperation, and peacebuilding. The Pact affirms that building a fairer and more resilient world depends on placing youth and innovation at the heart of global cooperation.
The assignment seeks to bring these perspectives to the regional-level at ESCAP. The main objectives of the role will be to amplify the work of ESCAP’s Innovation Team, through supporting innovations and ongoing projects in the work at ESCAP, including the leveraging of technology to support intergovernmental processes and other innovative initiatives. The UNV will also seek to find new and innovative ways to engage with divisions on bringing youth and youth perspectives to various ESCAP events and activities – this will include looking at inclusion strategies to develop more systemic engagement processes.
