Background and Purpose of the Assignment:
The World Food Programme (WFP) is the leading Humanitarian Organization fighting hunger and changing lives worldwide, delivering food assistance in emergencies, and working with communities to improve nutrition and build resilience. In Egypt, WFP is committed to supporting the Government’s priorities towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. WFP’s current five-year Country Strategic Plan (CSP) 2023-2028 is designed to fully support Egypt’s Vision 2030 and ensure food and nutrition security for all Egyptians and non-Egyptians.
The CSP focuses on three interrelated thematic areas:
1. Support the crisis-affected populations through food assistance and resilience building.
2. Improve the resilience of vulnerable Egyptian populations especially in Haya Kareema villages.
3. Provide capacity strengthening to the Government and support South-South cooperation between Egypt and neighboring countries.
Within this framework, the Nutrition Unit provides technical assistance and support to Egypt’s nutrition programmes, including developing nutrition and related food systems’ policies and strategies, institutional capacity strengthening, design and implementation of key national programmes such as school/adolescent nutrition, nutrition-sensitive social protection programmes for the prevention of malnutrition, including the ‘First 1000 days’, National Flour Fortification programme and evidence generation. WFP’s nutrition programmes are aligned with national priorities, and include providing direct assistance through Cash Based Transfers, capacity strengthening and training programmes. and the implementation of social and behavior change communication (SBCC) strategies to improve dietary practices and maternal and child nutrition outcomes.
Job Purpose:
Under the direct supervision of the Head of Nutrition, the Programme Assistant will provide programme and administrative support to ensure the effective implementation of WFP’s nutrition activities within the unit and across WFP’s relevant units. The incumbent will contribute to data management, coordination with partners, and reporting, to ensure alignment with WFP’s policies and operational standards.
Accountabilities/Responsibilities (not all-inclusive):
1. Perform specialized and/or standardized processes and activities within the specific technical area of work supporting alignment with wider nutrition programme policies and guidelines. Provide project management and/or general office support following established targets and WFP’s policies and procedures. Ensure alignment with WFP’s standards and processes for all implemented activities.
2. Within the specific area of responsibility, compile data and support analysis and preparation of different reports (e.g. Cash Based Transfers, budget monitoring and tracking, programme implementation status/performance of different activities) in order to support operational decision-making.
3. Coordinate and follow up the implementation of nutrition activities and provide timely and regular updates on any deviations from the wider implementation plans. This includes internal coordination within WFP as well as external coordination with counterparts and partners.
4. Perform accurate, timely recording of data within the specific technical area of work (e.g. data from field work, assessments, monitoring activities) following corporate standards and guidelines.
5. Support overall communication with local partners, agencies, NGOs and government institutions.
6. Act as a point of contact for resolution of general operational queries requesting assistance where necessary, ensuring autonomy of programme activities.
7. Follow standard emergency preparedness practices to ensure WFP is able to quickly respond and deploy needed resources to affected areas at the onset of the crisis.
Additional Responsibilities (Specific to Nutrition):
1. Support nutrition programme planning, and monitoring activities, preparing draft plans, and budgets for the different activities and in alignment with the given guidance, nutrition programme objectives, and different programme objectives.
2. Prepare field implementation plans, and closely monitor activities, in alignment with the overall nutrition workplan and donor requirements including related budgets and reporting.
3. Provide support to nutrition monitoring and evaluation activities including exchanging information with internal counterparts to support effective collaboration, implementation and monitoring of ongoing project activities.
4. Support in compiling and preparing draft inputs for reports, concept notes, proposals as needed.
5. Prepare presentations, meeting reports, and draft official letters.
Qualifications & Experience:
Education: Bachelor's degree in nutrition/health or Public Health, Economics, Social Sciences, international development, public policy, or any other relevant field
Experience: Five or more years of progressively responsible work experience in international development or humanitarian sectors or a relative business stream with experience general in administrative work.
Languages: Fluency in both written and spoken Arabic and English.
Knowledge & Skills:
• Programme management background with good knowledge of programme cycle elements.
• Ability to observe or assist with preparation for policy discussions, data analysis activities.
• Ability to communicate clearly and maintain professional working relationships with a variety of individuals across functions and with partners.
• Good coordination and trouble shooting skills, with the ability to assess situations and provide suggestions for solutions.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and familiarity with ERP systems (e.g., WINGS/SAP).
• Good understanding of general administrative processes and work routines.
• Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work effectively under pressure and with multicultural teams.
• Tact, courtesy, and discretion when dealing with stakeholders.
• Experience working with vulnerable populations is an asset.
• Knowledge of UN/NGO administrative procedures is an advantage
