What we do


The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide protection and humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and, at the same time, promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.


Purpose

 

Under the supervision and coach of the EcoSec Nutritionist, Deputy or Delegate, supports the implementation of nutrition-sensitive and nutrition-specific activities in coordination with other departments, mostly with Health. The Nutritionist B2 conducts assessments, monitoring and field visits to all the sites where EcoSec is implementing activities with special emphasis in the Primary Health Centres (PHC), Rafa Hospital, and Common Kitchens.

 

Accountabilities & functional responsibilities

 

  • Contributes to situation analysis in the areas of responsibility of sub delegation, the occupied territories & field, including.
    • The analysing of security, socioeconomic, cultural, and political environment as it relates to the ICRC.
    • Collect relevant information about emergency needs of conflict affected people in relations to the food and nutrition security and living condition in the 3 AoR of Gaza strip, and reports to the nutritionist, EcoSec Del or EcoSec Deputy Coordinator.
    • Provides the relevant data and analysis for the development of the EcoSec IL-OT nutrition strategy, and present in a written and structured format.
    • Gathers information necessary for stakeholder analysis, information on other actors, their activities etc.
    • Report on problems with accuracy and without delay.
    • Ensures that the needs, preferences, and vulnerabilities of beneficiaries of the nutrition-sensitive and nutrition-specific activities are appraised and well reflected in the annual planning process of the sub delegation.

 

  • Contribute to the implementation of the EcoSec Relief Program Common Kitchens and Common Ovens in Gaza Strip.
    • Takes responsibility for implementing nutrition-sensitive activities at Common Kitchen, and Cash for Nutrition in Gaza strip.
    • Sets-up a plan of action for any nutrition intervention, updates the periodic nutrition situational analysis and shares promptly with all concerned.
    • Propose adjustments or corrective steps, when necessary, in Food Consumption projects (ovens and kitchens projects).
    • Conduct regular assessments of kitchen facilities, food quality, hygiene, and safety practices.
    • Review and optimize menu cycles to ensure dietary adequacy, diversity, and cultural acceptability.
    • Assist the EcoSec Deputy Coordinator in Gaza with all administrative procedures related to the implementation of the nutrition programs. While Gaza context remains highly fluid, the task assigned may evolved based on the change in the operational environment.

 

  • Supports Primary Health Centers (PHCs) assisted by the ICRC implementing the CMAM program.
    • Works closely with the nutritionist based in Gaza or Jerusalem, in preparing nutrition related interventions for the consideration of relevant authorities in the ministry of health or PHCCs.
    • Creation of the synergies and collaboration with other national and international actors for nutrition-sensitive-interventions, mainly infant and young child feeding practices. 
    • In collaboration with the PHC field officers and EcoSec and Health Delegates, provides guidance to the 4 PHCs on screening, admission, monitoring, and discharge criteria according to the accepted national guidelines.
    • Supports the PHC healthcare staff on standardized case management protocols, anthropometric measurement, and reporting tools, ensuring data is properly collected.
    • In coordination with Health, conducts regular visit to the PHCs to review patient data and outcomes, analyze trends, and provide feedback to strengthen program performance.
    • In collaboration with other EcoSec team members and the Analysis and Evidence department, monitors and informs on the performance of the cash for nutrition program.

  • Rafah Field Hospital Support
    • In coordination with the Head Nurse and Health Deputy, support hospital team in the case management of malnutrition, including nutritional assessments, individualized nutrition care plans, and follow-up strategies.
    • In coordination with the EcoSec Deputy, provides input on logistics decisions related to specialized food commodities, feeding supplies, and enteral products.
    • Conducts coaching or small-scale training on clinical nutrition practices as needed.

 

  • Assist in other EcoSec Field activities
    • Participate in implementing and monitoring the various components of the EcoSec program
    • Plan and organize field visits.
    • Interview community members and beneficiaries, independently if necessary
    • Assist the sub delegation in identifying operational strategies and defining the plan of action.
    • Regularly updates, the situational analysis relating to other humanitarian actors dealing in nutrition sector response within geographic areas of responsibility.
    • Coordinate with other aid agencies on an ad-hoc basis.
    • Conduct regular field visits to PHCs, Rafa Hospital and Common Kitchen.
    • Contribute to data analysis and reporting, mostly for Cash for Nutrition (baselines, verification calls, post distribution monitoring, focus groups discussions), and Common Kitchens (baseline, monitoring and post distribution monitoring). Where necessary, support the work of Analysis and Evidence.
    • Attends to beneficiary feedback related to ICRC nutrition response, conducts beneficiary help desk and troubleshooting.
    • May be required to execute other task outside of this job description, depending on the operational reality.

 

  • Help to report on activities.
    • Contribute to the EcoSec weekly update on the nutrition related issues.

 

  • Office work
    • Prepare internal messages to other departments within the ICRC whenever needed.
    • Keeps account of expenditure for the nutrition-sensitive program.
    • Produces nutrition response related guidance, FAQs and supports the CCC in providing clear information on ICRC program to inquirers.

Desired profile and skills

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in agriculture, Food Science and Dietetics or other related field, with 2- 3 years of work experience in the fields of food security and nutrition is mandatory.
  • Good command of English language and Arabic, with a good written and spoken English competency.
  • Computer literate, with excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office programs; Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • More than 3 years of professional experience in nutrition programming and at least 1 year in implementation of nutrition in humanitarian or private sector setting.
