Duties and Responsibilities

- Client case Intake and Interviews: support the legal clinic in conducting initial client interviews to gather information on legal issues, protection concerns, factual circumstances, and other relevant details. Assess basic eligibility for legal aid services in line with the established criteria in close coordination with the associate legal protection officer (ALPO). - Case Documentation: Record and maintain accurate, detailed case files in compliance with confidentiality and data protection standards. Assist in preparing intake forms, case summaries, and other relevant legal documents. - Support to Protection Legal Team: Assist in preparing case forms, archiving supporting documentation. Support in scheduling appointments, coordinating follow-ups, and updating case trackers, support during awareness sessions and training. - Legal Awareness and Outreach: Assist in organizing legal awareness sessions for refugees and other community engagement. Help develop simple legal information materials in coordination with the legal Protection team and follow up with financial and logistics components of the workload. - Reporting: Contribute in the design and implementation of high-quality analysis, surveys questionnaires, research and assessments. - Other Duties: Participate in meetings, take minutes when requested, and assist in drafting progress reports. Perform other related duties as required to ensure the efficiency of legal aid services.

Qualifications/special skills

- Fresh graduate with a degree in Law, Human Rights, or a related field from a reputable accredited university. - Strong skills in Microsoft software applications MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Familiarity with legal research methods and case documentation. Adherence to the basic protection principles and standards, ensuring confidentiality and data protection, the ability to analyze information and gather necessary evidence through client interviews and case work.

Languages

- Excellent command of written and spoken Arabic and English.

Additional Information

UNRWA places the protection of Palestine refugees at the core of its mandate, with a strong emphasis on ensuring their rights under international law. Since 2020, the Protection Unit has developed a legal aid component to support access to justice for Palestinian refugees through legal counseling, representation, and awareness. This is delivered via a field-based legal protection station and a mobile legal clinic in Jordan Field Office. The legal aid approach is rooted in UNRWA’s Legal Protection Strategic Framework and promotes a human rights-based approach. It supports the Agency’s commitment to "do no harm" and to tailor legal assistance to the specific needs of individuals facing issues related to legal identity, documentation, and legal status. The Unit also engages in legal awareness, capacity-building, and advocacy to address the systemic legal barriers faced by Palestinian refugees. Within this framework, the Legal Aid Services Intern will provide support in case intake, eligibility assessment, documentation, registration and update of case information on the digital tools, under the supervision of the Legal protection Officer (LPO). *LEARNING OUTCOMES - Gained practical experience in legal aid service delivery in a humanitarian context. - Enhanced skills in legal interviewing, case documentation, and communication with clients. - Improved understanding of refugee legal needs, protection frameworks, and service referral pathways. - Developed experience in working within a UN operational environment. *DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS - Demonstrate very good knowledge and understanding of national and international legal framework on refugee law and human rights. - Strong organizational and time-management skills. - Good interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with vulnerable individuals. - Previous volunteer work experience in legal aid or humanitarian services is an asset. *COMPETENCIES - Communication skills: Listens actively, speaks clearly, Communicate and draft perfectly both Arabic and English. - Presentation skills, and organization skills: coupled with demonstrated ability to prioritize and work under pressure to deliver quality services under tight deadlines, ensuring attention to detail with accuracy in documentation and data entry - Teamwork: willingness to learn from others, and ability to work independently or in collaboration with colleagues while enjoying team spirit. - Client Orientation: Works effectively with people from diverse backgrounds; remains respectful and empathetic. - Ethics and Integrity: Maintains confidentiality, impartiality, and professional ethics in all situations, and takes responsibility for incorporating the UN standards, rules and regulations. - Proficient in tracking updates in relevant laws and regulations, translating complex legal language into practical guidance, and sharing timely updates with team members. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken, may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization.
