Malteser International (MI) has been working in Nigeria since 2017. In Northeast Nigeria (Borno, Taraba and Adamawa States), MI is currently active in the WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene), Protection, and Food, Nutrition Security and Livelihoods (FNSL) sectors, aiming to save lives and improve the well-being of both internally displaced persons (IDPs) and host communities. WASH activities focus on improving access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene through activities such as non-food-item-distribution, solarizing boreholes, rehabilitating hand pumps, constructing latrines, and promoting hygiene practices. Protection activities target the prevention of and response to gender-based violence (GBV). FNSL interventions include micro-gardening, rearing pullets for egg production, composting, food demonstrations, referrals of malnutrition cases to nutrition partners, and community sensitization on nutrition. MI applies a participatory, gender-sensitive, and inclusive approach.

For our work in Nigeria, Malteser International is looking for a Country Program Coordinator.

Under the direct supervision of the Country Director, The Country Program Coordinator will be responsible for line managing the technical staff comprising (WASH; FSN , Protection; MEAL), subject to evolution of programme and structure. The CPC will also be responsible for the provision of strong leadership in coordinating and supporting the entire programme cycle in  Malteser  International (MI) Nigeria-supported programme areas, including the Northeast, North West,  and future programming areas.  Specifically lead, control programme development process, including rigorous assessments,  proposal development, and guidance during the kick-off of new projects. Work with Technical Advisors to develop evidence-based sector strategies and projects and to strengthen program integration. S/he takes a lead in establishing systems for program monitoring, quality improvement, accountability, evaluation, and learning, and in ensuring that learning and results are captured, shared, and used to inform programs.  Ensure efficient and best practice in grants management,  guaranteeing that MI is compliant in all programme deliverables, including reporting to expectations and existing agreements. As a senior leader in the country office, s/he plays a representational role with the government, donors, partners, and others, and effectively cascades key issues to the coordination/senior management team and HQ as appropriate.

Your responsibilities:

  • Provide strategic leadership for programme design, resource mobilisation, donor engagement, and intelligence gathering to position MI for new funding opportunities.

  • Lead high-quality project design, MEAL systems, and evaluations, ensuring evidence-based planning, strong methodologies, and timely implementation of recommendations.

  • Ensure effective data collection, analysis, accountability, and learning, with regular dissemination of insights to SMT and staff to drive programme quality improvement.

  • Oversee programme implementation and compliance, ensuring alignment with grant agreements, budgets, procurement plans, and international humanitarian standards (SPHERE, IASC, CHS).

  • Strengthen team capacity and performance, ensuring appropriate staffing structures, technical support, and continuous professional development across programme teams.

  • Lead external engagement and partnerships, representing MI in technical forums, coordinating with authorities and donors, and managing partnership development and oversight.

  • Demonstrate strong leadership, strategic thinking, problem-solving, communication, and interpersonal skills, with a commitment to MI values, the ability to work effectively across diverse teams and environments, and the resilience to operate in high-stress field contexts.

Your profile:

  • Master’s degree in relevant social science, human rights, development studies, NGO management, or equivalent fields, with a minimum of ten (10) years of progressive senior management and/or development experience in a corporate or NGO environment.

  • Strong skills and proven experience in new program development, project design, and donor proposal design with corporate, foundations, and institutional donors, including business development and fundraising skills and experience, will be an added advantage 

  • Experience working with high-level government agencies and academics on international humanitarian programmes with strong skills and proven experience in leading strategic planning, change management, and program management processes; also, from a knowledge and learning perspective 

  • Developing and managing monitoring, evaluation, and learning systems

  • Excellent listening, interpersonal, communication, and networking skills, and an ability to work with diversified populations.

  • Proven skills such as training, capacity building, coaching, mentorship, problem solving, analytical, and an understanding of project cycle management and coordination

  • High level of self-awareness and willingness to take criticism as an opportunity for growth and self-development, and proven ability to research, write, and represent well, manage time, multitask, and delegate tasks
