The Consultant Psychiatrist reports directly to the Health Manager. He/she will be expected to work under Clinical services program with a main objective of management of the complex psychiatric cases across all IRC health facilities. The Consultant Psychiatrist’s overall objective will be to advice the mental health team and primary healthcare providers on appropriate medications and other treatment strategies, provide support on diagnosing and managing behavioral health conditions in Kakuma refugee camp.

Key Responsibilities

  • Direct evaluation of patients with complex diagnostic or therapeutic challenges who have been identified and line listed.
  • Document clear management plans for all patients seen during the visit.
  • Provide refresher training and updates on MhGAP to clinicians who underwent the training previously.
  • Development and delivery of in-service training for primary care providers regarding recognition of common psychiatric presentations in humanitarian settings. 
  • Provide clinical supervision to the mental health nurse offering psychiatric services in the camp and recommend on opportunities for growth.
  • Be available to provide follow up telephone consultation to the mental health nurse 1 month after the initial visit to update patient management plans.
  • Compile and share report a quality-of-care report on management of mental health conditions in the camp with recommendations on key areas that need strengthening.
  • Any other responsibility deemed necessary to the program by the supervisor.

Required Qualifications.

  • Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) degree from an institution recognized by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council.
  • Master of Medicine (MMed) in Psychiatry from an institution recognized by KMPDU.
  • Certificate of Registration by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council.
  • A valid practicing license from the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council.

Required Experience & Competencies:

  • Experience of working in a limited resource setting and/or humanitarian setting is preferred.
  • Trainer of trainers in mhGAP strongly preferred.
  • Strong communication skills: oral: written and presentation skills.
  • Should be a team player and culturally sensitive
  • Ability to work and live in harsh environmental conditions.
  • Demonstrate integrity by modelling the IRC values and ethical standards.
