Overall purpose of the role: Protection Officer (Legal Aid) works under direct line management of the Head of Programme and is responsible for implementing DRC’s legal aid programming in Jordan. This includes legal information dissemination, counselling, assistance, and support with civil documentation and legal awareness for refugees and other displacement-affected populations. The role also supports broader protection activities as needed to meet program objectives and ensure rights-based service delivery.
About the job:
The individual will report directly to the Head of Programme. Your main duties and responsibilities will be:
Programming & Operations:
- Develop and implement work plans for legal aid activities in line with project objectives.
- Conduct legal awareness sessions on civil documentation, residency, labor law, and Housing, Land & Property (HLP) rights.
- Provide legal counselling and assistance through community outreach and mobile protection desks.
- Support beneficiaries in obtaining or renewing civil and identity documentation.
- Develop and disseminate IEC materials on legal rights and available services.
- Implement standardized legal case management procedures.
- Conduct rapid assessments to identify legal needs and tailor responses accordingly.
- Organize capacity-building sessions for staff, community structures, and government stakeholders on refugee law and protection principles.
Reporting:
- Maintain accurate records of legal cases and services provided.
- Submit regular progress reports to the Protection Team Leader.
Coordination:
- Liaise with local authorities, legal aid providers, and humanitarian actors to strengthen referral pathways.
- Participate in legal and protection working groups.
- Collaborate with other DRC sector teams to ensure integrated programming.
Other:
- Adhere to DRC’s Age, Gender, and Diversity policy and AGD programmatic minimum standards
- Ensure compliance with zero-tolerance to Sexual Exploitation and Abuse policy.
- Ensure compliance with DRC guidelines and policies on HR, admin, finance, and supply chain in accordance with the Operational Handbook.
- Perform other relevant tasks as requested by country-level Protection Manager.
About you
To be successful in this role we expect that you possess the following:
- University degree in Law (LL.B or equivalent).
- Minimum 2 years of experience in legal aid or protection programming, preferably in a humanitarian context.
- Strong knowledge of Jordanian legal framework and administrative procedures.
- Familiarity with international refugee law and human rights standards.
- Experience working with refugees, asylum seekers, and vulnerable populations. Ability to maintain confidentiality, respect, non-discrimination and safety of beneficiaries at all times;
- Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills, creativity and flexibility.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
- Native Arabic speaker.
- Fluency in English is desirable.
