The Forecasting and Early Warning Unit at the World Food Programme (WFP) plays a pivotal role in anticipating and mitigating food insecurity through data-driven insights and predictive analytics. By integrating real-time data streams, geospatial intelligence, and forecasting models, the Unit empowers WFP and its partners to make timely, evidence-based decisions that protect vulnerable populations.
To scale its early warning capabilities and transition prototypes into production-grade systems, the Unit is investing in robust software infrastructure. HungerMapLIVE, WFP’s platform, serves as a dynamic interface for monitoring global food security trends and facilitating rapid response.
To support this effort, WFP is recruiting a fullstack developer with strong backend and frontend skills, cloud infrastructure experience, and a collaborative mindset. The consultant will contribute to the development, deployment, and maintenance of scalable systems that power real-time ingestion, analytics, and visualization workflows, while ensuring resilience, usability, and compliance with WFP’s IT standards.
ACCOUNTABILITIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
The consultant will join the Unit’s team in Rome under the direct supervision of the Lead Software Developer, and will be responsible for the following activities:
- Assist in data integration initiatives including near real-time data ingestion, processing, dashboards, bulletins and visualizations.
- Deploy and maintain HungerMap LIVE features and data layers (reports, schedulers, etc).
- Support infrastructure maintenance activities as needed.
- Advise on software development practices.
- Contribute to the harmonization of tools and development patterns, including code maintenance in version control, system management through automation, and deployment strategies.
- Undertake field missions for country support, facilitate trainings targeting WFP staff and partners.
- Liaise with WFP’s IT department to ensure compliance on the above.
- Perform any other task as required.
DELIVERABLES AT THE END OF THE CONTRACT:
- Assist in FE communication to the BE
- Refactored ingestion pipeline for improved efficiency and reliability
- Secure, optimized backend modules supporting LLM functionality
- Internal backend tools and shared libraries documentation
- Weekly backend health metrics and status updates to supervisor
- Backend integration support for infrastructure
- Create downloadable reports
- Technical documentation on caching, security, and asynchronous flows
- Handover notes for disaster recovery and system resilience strategies
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
Education:
Master`s degree in engineering, computer science, physics, mathematics or similar or bachelor's degree plus 2 years of relevant experience
Experience:
At least 4 years of experience in IT related field with a focus on Python, AWS & some React.
Knowledge & Skills:
- Strong knowledge of AWS services such as EC2, S3, Lambda, API Gateway
- Familiarity with DDD, DI, SOLID & Clean Code principles.
- Experience with Git version control.
- Experience with deployment strategies, Docker, Kubernetes continuous integration, Unit Testing.
- Experience in React, Redux, and other front-end technologies.
- Understanding of secure coding practices, authentication/authorization flows (OAuth2, JWT), and data protection.
- Experience implementing role-based access control and audit logging.
- Expertise in Python and its frameworks such as FastAPI, Django or Flask.
Languages:
Excellent spoken and written English; spoken and written French highly desired.
