Overview of position

Under the overall supervision of the Senior/Program Associate (MHU) and direct supervision of the health facility in charge/Team Leader, and administrative supervision of relevant Heads of Sub Office, the Vaccinator will actively engage in community and facility-based immunization activities, inclusive of Routine Immunization, Polio, risk communication and community engagement activities. The vaccinator is expected to carry out his/her duties in accordance with the strictest ethical standards, building and maintaining partnerships with the government, international organizations, and non-governmental agencies, and with due respect for gender and socio-cultural sensitivities. Deployment areas may include IDP settlements in rural or remote areas within the project scope.

Role objectives

Core Functions / Responsibilities:

  • Conduct individual and group health education and awareness sessions on health promotion topics, including vaccine-preventable diseases such as Polio, Measles, and Tetanus, as well as Pneumonia, malnutrition, and maternal and child health. These sessions should be provided to individuals attending health facilities and during outreach activities.

  • Ensure delivery of routine immunization activities based on the MoPH/EPI immunization policy strategy.

  • Develop/maintain an up-to-date immunization micro plan for fixed and outreach in consultation with the health facility in charge and the community mobilizer on a monthly/quarterly basis.

  • To maintain an updated list of the EPI monitoring chart, map, absent list, stock book, and defaulter tracing registers to follow them in fixed and outreach sessions.

  • Develop daily and monthly immunization session plans for fixed/outreach sessions and maintain an up-to-date line listing of children under five/two within the catchment area.

  • To provide routine immunization vaccines to returnees, IDPs and the host community population in targeted areas.

  • Ensure safety of vaccines (observing VVMs), prevent vaccine wastage, regularly record vaccine storage temperature, and always follow up on the functionality of the cold chain equipment.

  • To respond immediately to any cold chain irregularity using local resources, including transferring Vaccines to the closest health facility with a cold chain system and report to the health facility in charge and the senior/program associate.

  • Timely preparation of the monthly vaccination report and vaccine requests based on the MVAR and VRF and follow up with the health facility in charge and relevant PEMT. Strictly maintain Infection Prevention Protocols and attend the EPI events as needed.

  • Actively seek out communities in need of routine and Polio vaccines and other activities, including regular disease outbreak monitoring, collect statistical information, take part in the health awareness campaign, etc.

  • To mobilize the community to immunize their children and women of reproductive age.

  • Contribute to the consistent and accurate collection of data into the KOBO system for fixed, outreach or VTT activities.

  • Provide complete, accurate and on-time monthly activity reports, entered daily into Kobo.

  • All other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications and Experience

Education:

  • Diploma in Nursing/Midwifery/Laboratory/Pharmacy from an accredited academic institution and/or having a valid certificate for the three-month initial MOPH/EPI immunization training.

  • With 1 year of experience in relevant vaccination and outreach health promotive and preventive activities.

Experience:

  • Having received the three-month initial MOPH/EPI immunization training. Receiving the vaccination refresher training is an advantage.

  • Previous experience in an international organization is an advantage. Knowledge and experience with working in the field and medical emergency department and Trauma management will be considered an advantage.

  • Effectively applies knowledge on clinical skills, bedside manner, infection control, administering medication, surveillance data collection, Health Education etc.

  • Works effectively with local authorities, stakeholders, and beneficiaries.

  • Working in an emergency and development project.

Skills:

  • Ability to work effectively in high-pressure, rapidly changing environments.

  • Strong communication and facilitation skills

  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with implementing partners.

  • Willingness to work long hours and weekends when necessary.

Languages:

  • For all Applicants, fluency in Fluency in Dari and Pashto is required (oral and written).

  • Working knowledge of English required.

  • Fluency in all national language(s) are highly advantages.
