Communications Assistant for HMA (social media focus)

The Danish Refugee Council (DRC), one of the world’s leading NGOs, with a focus on responding to displacement, have been registered in Sudan since 2004, delivering life-saving programming in protection, emergency response, shelter, food security and livelihoods, disaster risk reduction, camp management, and humanitarian mine action. DRC has implemented projects in Central Darfur, South Kordofan, Gedaref, Port Sudan, and White Nile. Sudan hosts one of the largest displaced populations in Africa, with over 3.7 million internally displaced people and over 1.1 million refugees from South Sudan, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Central African Republic, Chad, Yemen and Syria. Against a background of political crisis, Sudan faces economic and social turmoil, with sharp increases in food and energy costs, further exacerbated by disease outbreaks and ongoing conflict.

POSITION PROFILE

Promote mission, mandate, work and advocacy strategies of DRC Sudan’s HDP (Humanitarian Disarmament & Peacebuilding) Team in country, working closely with the HDP team to identify appropriate methods to communicate to relevant parties, with a particular focus on social media activities including but not limited to Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and LinkedIn.

Overall purpose of the role:

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the development and implementation of in-house creative campaigns and content for different channels, including writing copies, brainstorming ideas for and producing messages, stories, videos, photos, radio broadcasts, infographics, film, animation and social media.
  • Develop engaging and creative content that speaks to both professional and non-professional audiences in Sudan, and globally targeting different groups.
  • Develop a social media content strategy and maintain a weekly updated social media calendar
  • Contribute to global campaigns and donor communication with material the showcase and promote DRC work in Sudan.
  • Actively engage with online audiences through social media channels and respond in a timely manner to messages and comments.
  • Produce monthly analytical reports, monitor content performance and extract learnings
  • Maintain a database on Sudan’s relevant youth organizations, youth groups, and social media influencers.
  • Develop ToRs for collaboration and coordinate with influencers, animators, writers and editors as needed.
  • Develop a list of media contacts, influencers and other relevant stakeholders in country for pitching stories and story ideas on DRC, its response and general HDP context.
  • Identification of HDP key communications and visibility needs, and coordination with programme and country staff to best identify materials and modalities of dissemination.
  • Ensure quality and content of all public information documents for DRC activities, in coordination with relevant staff.
  • Assist with media liaison and coordination- assist with the drafting of press releases, feature stories, factsheets and opinion pieces in both Arabic and possibly English for use in DRC channels and in traditional and specifically online media, including newspapers, magazines and media outlets

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCES

Experience and technical competencies: 

  • At least 1 year's experience in a similar role, preferably in an NGO.
  • Strong computer/digital skills (Office, In design, Photoshop, Premiere pro, Canva)
  • Advanced English proficiency desirable
  • Fluency in Arabic

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

Diploma in graphic design, filmmaking, communications, public relations or equivalent - or equivalent professional qualification

LANGUAGES

  • Fluency in written and spoken Arabic

Good command in written and spoken English desired
