DRC Uganda is currently looking for a highly qualified and motivated individual to join our dynamic team a Livestock Officer. 

The role is conditional upon funding being secured for the project. 

The overall purpose of the role: 

The Livestock Officer will support the implementation of livestock value chains under the Uganda Climate Smart Agricultural Transformation Project in refugee settlements. The role focuses on strengthening smallholder poultry and piggery production, delivering climate smart livestock management training, improving feed formulation practices including use of Black Soldier Fly larvae, and supporting farmer groups to adopt resilient livestock husbandry techniques. The Livestock Officer will work closely with district authorities, settlement leadership and community-based facilitators to increase productivity and resilience of livestock enterprises for targeted households. 

Your main duties and responsibilities will be: 

  • Provide technical training to farmer groups on poultry and piggery production, including housing design, feeding, husbandry, disease prevention and breed selection. 

  • Support implementation of the approved Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries livestock curriculum through Farmer Field Schools and practical demonstrations. 

  • Assist beneficiaries in establishing livestock units and applying good management practices. 

  • Support feed formulation using locally available materials, including integration of Black Soldier Fly larvae to improve nutrition and reduce costs. 

  • Provide follow up mentoring and routine extension support to farmer groups and lead farmers. 

  • Ensure livestock production activities integrate climate smart agriculture and sustainable land management principles. 

  • Support input distribution through the e-voucher system, ensuring timely access to starter kits, breeding stock and tools. 

  • Collaborate with the Entomologist to link Black Soldier Fly production with livestock feed systems. 

  • Assist in strengthening farmer groups under the Farmer Institutional Development model, including recordkeeping and group dynamics. 

  • Collect field data on livestock production, adoption rates, and value chain performance using project approved tools. 

  • Participate in joint supervision missions with district authorities, the Office of the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries. 

  • Ensure livestock activities comply with environmental and social safeguards, including animal welfare, waste management and conflict sensitivity. 

  • Provide timely inputs for monthly, quarterly, and annual reports including geo referenced photos and livestock performance data. 

About you 

  • To be successful in this role, we expect you to have a minimum of 5 years of experience in livestock production, poultry/piggery management or livestock extension. Moreover, we also expect the following:  

Required 

  • A Bachelor's degree in Animal Science, Livestock Production, Veterinary Medicine or related field. 

  • Experience training smallholder farmers in livestock husbandry, preferably in refugee hosting or rural settings. 

  • Practical knowledge of livestock housing, feeding, health management and smallholder livestock enterprise development. 

  • Experience with climate smart livestock practices and integration of insect based feed systems. 

  • Ability to work with farmer groups, Farmer Field Schools and community facilitators. 

  • Experience collecting livestock related data and supporting field reporting. 

  • Knowledge of environmental safeguards and biosecurity measures. 

  • Fluency in written & Spoken English. 

Desirable 

  • Additional training in poultry/piggery management, climate smart livestock practices or feed formulation is an added advantage. 

  • Knowledge of local languages spoken in refugee settlements is an asset.
