Duties and Responsibilities

The Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) aims to conserve terrestrial, aquatic and avian migratory species throughout their range. CMS is an intergovernmental treaty, concluded under the aegis of the United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment), concerned with the conservation of wildlife and habitats on a global scale. The CMS Secretariat maintains close institutional and programmatic linkages with its instruments, even with those Agreements which are legally independent. CMS and its Instruments are often collectively referred to as the “CMS Family”. At present, 133 Parties (132 countries plus the European Union) have become a Contracting Party of the Convention. The Secretariats of CMS and its Agreements (the African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbird Agreement (AEWA), ASCOBANS and EUROBATS) are located at the United Nations headquarters in Bonn, Germany. This is an in-person internship, but applicants may be requested on an exceptional basis to undertake the internship remotely in view of constraints regarding visa issuance, international travel, and access to UN premises. The internship is unpaid. Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background and the internship period. This internship is conducted within the Joint CMS/AEWA Information Management, Communication and Awareness-Raising (IMCA) Unit. Full-time positions are available, each for an initial duration of three months, with the possibility of extension up to six months. Internship positions can start at any time in 2026 and will be refilled throughout the year. Interns must express in their cover letter their desired start and end dates. Under the supervision of the IMCA Coordinator, and in cooperation with other members of the Unit, the intern will perform a selection of the following tasks (these duties are not all-inclusive nor are all duties carried out by all interns): • Assist in the production of a wide spectrum of communication and information management products and activities for CMS, AEWA, including supporting outreach activities of large international meetings such as the meetings of the governing bodies (e.g COP) and global campaigns. • Generate communications content for the websites managed by the Unit by researching and drafting articles. • Support the development of audio-visual and multimedia products (video clips, animations, graphics, podcasts) for publication on YouTube channels and promotion on social media. • Assist in implementing the World Migratory Bird Day Campaign (www.worldmigratorybirdday.org). This will include assisting in the drafting of articles, maintaining website content, liaising with partners and event organisers, supporting event logistics, drafting social media content, generating reports and other tasks as needed. • Support the day-to-day management of the social media channels managed by the Unit (X, Bluesky, LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram or Whatsapp). • Support press/media-related work by conducting research, preparing documents, keeping track of media requests, drafting pitches to journalists and assisting in the maintenance of a targeted list of journalists, among other tasks. • Support the maintenance of databases, filing and archiving activities. • Perform any other tasks upon request.
