Overview

The Clinton Health Access Initiative, Inc. (CHAI) is a global health organization committed to our mission of saving lives and reducing the burden of disease in low-and middle-income countries. We work at the invitation of governments to support them and the private sector to create and sustain high-quality health systems.

CHAI was founded in 2002 in response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic with the goal of dramatically reducing the price of life-saving drugs and increasing access to these medicines in the countries with the highest burden of the disease. Over the following two decades, CHAI has expanded its focus. Today, along with HIV, we work in conjunction with our partners to prevent and treat infectious diseases such as COVID-19, malaria, tuberculosis, and hepatitis. Our work has also expanded into cancer, diabetes, hypertension, and other non-communicable diseases, and we work to accelerate the rollout of lifesaving vaccines, reduce maternal and child mortality, combat chronic malnutrition, and increase access to assistive technology. We are investing in horizontal approaches to strengthen health systems through programs in human resources for health, digital health, and health financing. With each new and innovative program, our strategy is grounded in maximizing sustainable impact at scale, ensuring that governments lead the solutions, that programs are designed to scale nationally, and learnings are shared globally.

At CHAI, our people are our greatest asset, and none of this work would be possible without their talent, time, dedication and passion for our mission and values. We are a highly diverse team of enthusiastic individuals across 40 countries with a broad range of skillsets and life experiences. CHAI is deeply grounded in the countries we work in, with majority of our staff based in program countries. Learn more about our exciting work: http://www.clintonhealthaccess.org

CHAI is an Equal Opportunity Employer, and is committed to providing an environment of fairness, and mutual respect where all applicants have access to equal employment opportunities. CHAI values diversity and inclusion, and recognizes that our mission is best advanced by the leadership and contributions of people with diverse experience, backgrounds, and culture.

Program Overview

Leveraging deep expertise in strengthening healthcare systems, CHAI has launched an ambitious Artificial Intelligence (AI) initiative that responsibly harnesses AI to radically enhance health delivery, improve patient and provider experiences, and achieve significant cost and efficiency gains in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). AI promises a significant leap in in diagnostics, treatment optimization, patient engagement, and health systems efficiency. CHAI's AI initiative seeks to systematically capture and scale these benefits, delivering meaningful, sustainable health impacts at scale.

CHAI is seeking multiple Senior Associates to join its growing AI team. Reporting to one of the Associate Directors on the AI team, the Senior Associate(s) will play a critical role in designing, implementing, and scaling AI-driven programs across CHAI's global portfolio. This is a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of innovation and impact—helping to shape how AI transforms health delivery in resource-limited settings. The Senior Associate will support a range of initiatives including internal AI transformation of CHAI program teams, in-country AI pilot implementations with government partners, and global market shaping efforts to accelerate responsible AI adoption across LMICs.

We are seeking highly motivated individuals with strong technical translation skills, product thinking, and a passion for applying emerging technologies to global health challenges. Ideal candidates will bring experience as product managers, technical consultants, or former engineers with an interest in transitioning into product or strategy roles. A demonstrated ability to rapidly learn and deploy AI tools, define user requirements, and manage technology projects from concept to launch is essential. The Senior Associate will be expected to function with significant independence, navigate ambiguity, and collaborate effectively across diverse teams and geographies.

This position is flexible to being based in the United States or in a CHAI program country (subject to country leadership approval and ability to obtain work authorization). The role requires 20-40% international travel, including occasional multi-week stretches during critical project launch periods. This position can be levelled at a Senior Associate or Manager depending on level of experience.

Responsibilities

  • Support the design and implementation of AI pilot programs in CHAI partner countries, working closely with government counterparts, CHAI country teams, and technology partners to ensure successful adoption and scale-up
  • Drive internal transformation efforts to increase the impact of CHAI's programs through AI, including identifying high-value use cases, building internal capacity, and developing tools and workflows that enhance program effectiveness
  • Contribute to the design of global market shaping and AI public goods initiatives that accelerate the safe and responsible implementation of AI in LMIC health settings
  • Define user requirements and product specifications for AI-enabled tools, translating between technical and non-technical stakeholders to ensure solutions meet real-world needs
  • Project manage technology initiatives from concept through launch, coordinating across engineers, designers, program teams, and government partners
  • Rapidly prototype and test AI-enabled solutions using low-code and no-code tools, demonstrating value and iterating based on user feedback
  • Develop compelling presentations, briefs, and other materials to communicate AI strategy, project progress, and impact to internal leadership, government partners, and donors
  • Monitor the evolving AI landscape, identifying emerging tools, frameworks, and best practices relevant to global health applications
  • Support fundraising and donor engagement efforts, including contributing to proposal development and reporting
  • Travel internationally 20-40% of the time, including extended periods during critical project periods
  • Undertake other responsibilities as needed at the request of the Associate Director or senior leadership
Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent and at least 5 years of relevant professional experience; backgrounds in computer science, economics, public health, public policy, mathematics, statistics, or other quantitative fields are welcome
  • Passion for and demonstrated expertise in AI, including strong familiarity with core machine learning and generative AI concepts
  • Demonstrated experience in product management, technical consulting, or technology project management, with a track record of delivering projects from concept to launch
  • Strong technical translation skills, including the ability to define user requirements and communicate effectively between engineers and non-technical stakeholders
  • Demonstrated expertise in modern AI tools and platforms (e.g., ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, NotebookLM, etc.) with informed perspectives on their relative strengths, limitations, and appropriate applications
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and quantitative skills
  • Entrepreneurial mindset, including the ability to work independently with limited guidance, navigate ambiguity, and propose and implement new approaches
  • Strong written and oral communication skills in English, including the ability to prepare compelling presentations, memos, and technical documentation
  • Ability to build collaborative relationships with diverse stakeholders, including government officials, technical teams, and international partners
  • High level of proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, PowerPoint, and Word
  • Willingness and ability to travel internationally 20-40% of the time, including for occasional multi-week trips to CHAI country offices

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with governments, multilateral organizations, and / or in LMIC settings
  • Background in clinical health settings, global health, public health, or health systems strengthening
  • Basic proficiency in Python, SQL, or other programming languages
  • Proficiency in languages spoken in CHAI program countries (Hindi, French, Swahili, etc.)
