Working time Full time

Place of work Frankfurt am Main, Germany

Closing date 26.01.2026

Your team

You will be part of the Language Services Division in the Directorate General Communications. Our Division provides translation, editing, proofreading and language technology services in all EU languages to other parts of the ECB, as well as offering advice on linguistic matters. Our work covers a wide range of texts for both experts and the general public, including publications and multilingual content for the ECB’s websites, and is aimed at making the ECB’s operations accessible to a variety of audiences.

In your role as a Senior Spanish translator, you will be part of a small team of in-house and external Spanish translators who, together with colleagues translating into other EU languages, are responsible for communicating the ECB’s messages to over 400 million Europeans who do not have English as their first language. You will help to produce ECB communications in Spanish (translating from English into Spanish on the basis of the mother-tongue principle), working closely with other translators, language technologists/terminologists and our administrative team as well as experts from across the ECB. You will also work closely with other colleagues in our Directorate General as part of cross-divisional teams handling strategic communication projects or urgent tasks.

The ECB is an inclusive employer and we strive to reflect the diversity of the population we serve. We encourage you to apply irrespective of age, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, race, religious beliefs, sexual orientation or other characteristics.

Your role

As a Senior Spanish translator, you will:
  • translate texts from English into Spanish (mother-tongue principle) in the fields of economics, finance, central banking and banking supervision;
  • revise and proofread texts written in Spanish;
  • identify, extract and compile terminology in Spanish;
  • work with state-of-the-art language technology tools, including machine translation, and maintain translation memories in Spanish;
  • work collaboratively with our other Spanish translator to produce ECB communications in Spanish in close teamwork;
  • contribute to the overall strategy of the Division by providing ideas, embracing innovation and being part of the evolution of the translation industry.

The position offers you excellent opportunities to translate a wide range of text types for a variety of audiences, apply clear language principles and develop a strong understanding of economics, finance, central banking and banking supervision.

You will be part of a multicultural team that strives for continuous innovation to make a positive impact on the lives of European citizens.

Qualifications, experience and skills

Essential:
  • a master’s degree or equivalent in translation, modern languages or another relevant field (see How you can join us for details on degree equivalences);
  • in addition to the above, a minimum of seven years’ experience as a professional translator working from English into Spanish (on the basis of the mother-tongue principle) in the field of economics, finance, central banking or banking supervision;
  • experience of working with computer-assisted translation tools;
  • a mastery-level (C2) command of Spanish and an advanced (C1) command of English, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Desired:
  • experience of working as an in-house translator for Spanish;
  • an intermediate (B1) command of at least one other official language of the EU, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

You engage collaboratively with others. You pursue team goals and learn willingly from other people’s diverse perspectives. You signal any need for change by explaining it and proposing alternative solutions. You analyse complex information effectively and can evaluate different views to arrive at solutions. You know and anticipate stakeholder needs.

You are motivated to contribute to the ECB’s mission, to serve the citizens of the EU as a member of a public institution and to work with colleagues from all over Europe.

You are motivated to be part of our team and to develop and use your skills and competencies to achieve the aims of this position.

Working modalities

To enable the Division to maintain its business continuity capability, you will occasionally be expected to perform work during non-standard working hours and work at the ECB’s standby sites.

We would be happy to discuss a part-time arrangement for this role.
