Malteser International has been working in Nigeria since 2017. In Northeast Nigeria and more specifically in Borno, Taraba and Adamawa States, MI is currently active in the WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene), Protection and FNSL sectors for saving and improving the lives of both the IDP/refugee populations as well as the host communities. The WASH activities focus on improved access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene, including NFI distribution, solarization of boreholes, rehabilitation of hand pumps, construction of latrines, and hygiene promotion. The protection activities focus on prevention and response to Gender Based Violence (GBV)  cases.  The Food Nutrition Security and Livelihood interventions mainly focus on micro gardening, pullet rearing for egg production, composting and Nutrition (food demonstration, referrals of malnutrition cases to nutrition partners, and sensitisation on nutrition). Malteser International applies a participatory, gender-sensitive and inclusive approach.

For its work in Jere, Borno State Nigeria, Malteser International is looking for a qualified Nutrition Assistant – National Position.

Under the direct report of the Area Coordinator, the Nutrition Assistance is responsible for the implementation of nutrition activities in Dusuman community in Jere LGA, Borno State, Nigeria. Within the responsibilities, the nutrition assistance will need to ensure compliance with Malteser International’s and donor guidelines to implement nutrition intervention.

Your responsibilities:

  • Support the planning, coordination, and implementation of nutrition projects in line with project objectives, donor requirements, and Malteser International (MI) guidelines under the supervision of the Area Coordinator
  • Conduct nutrition activities including Mid-Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) screening for children under five and Pregnant and Lactating Women (PLW), identification and referral of malnourished cases, follow-up of referrals, and support Maternal Infant and Young Child Feeding Nutrition (MIYCN) counselling and mother-to-mother support groups
  • Assist in capacity building through training and supervision of community mobilizers, nutrition messaging facilitators, lead mothers and fathers
  • Oversee and support Tom Brown production, cooking demonstrations, food preparation, feeding practices, and proper management and distribution of nutrition commodities through approved vendors
  • Collect, maintain, and manage accurate data and records on screenings, counselling, referrals, attendance, and participation, and submit timely reports in compliance with MI standards
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with community leaders, local partners, volunteers, and beneficiaries, while ensuring gender mainstreaming and participation in coordination meetings
  • Ensure compliance with Malteser International’s mandate, code of conduct, humanitarian principles, and staff regulations, while reporting operational, safety, security, HR, and logistics issues promptly to supervisors

Your profile:

  • Minimum academic qualification of University Degree or equivalence in any related relevant field, with a minimum of 2 years prior experience in the sector, preferably in the humanitarian context
  • Demonstrated management skills (e.g. field team, project, security and safety) 
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the capacity to see the big picture and make sound judgments and decisions
  • Proactive, resourceful, solutions-oriented, and results-oriented, with a genuine interest in learning
  • Flexibility and strong communication skills with proven ability to work effectively with local governments, align with MI values and standards
  • Knowledge of local context, including dialects of the titled location, is a major criteria
  • Being a qualified indigene of Borno State is an asset; with demonstrated ability to speak and understand the local dialects of the titled location
