Salary:

US$ 84,672 net per annum, plus post adjustment (currently US$ 62,742). Salary is free of income tax in the United Kingdom.

Purpose for the Post

Under the immediate supervision of the Head, French Translation Section, the successful candidate will work on a variety of translation, revision and research duties in their field of competence. Additionally, the incumbent will be expected to carry out administrative tasks, as required by the Head of Section.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Translation and revision and self-revision of texts covering a wide range of technical, legal and administrative subjects from English and Spanish into French. Text may be intended for use in meeting documents or for publication.
  2. Review the translation work performed by freelance translators and revise their work as necessary.
  3. When the circumstances require, at the request of the Head, French Translation Section:
    organize and coordinate the work of French translators and monitor progress of such work in relation to an agreed schedule
    grade tests of candidates for employment, including prospective contractual translators, and provide staff evaluations for use in performance appraisals.
  4. Assist in the recruitment of translators.
  5. Carry out linguistic research and assist the Senior Reviser in compiling, developing and maintaining a uniform French maritime terminology suitable for translation of documentation issued by the Organization. This should be done taking into account the terminology  in use in the organizations of the United Nations system.
  6. Take part in night shifts during meetings, as regularly as required, and travel on missions as necessary.
  7. Undertake other related duties as may be assigned.

  3. Excellent ability to draft in correct, clear and concise language.
  4. Thorough and meticulous attention to detail, ensuring accurate and timely delivery.
  5. Demonstrated ability to conduct research on terminology with a high degree of initiative and judgement.

Professional Experience

At least seven years of professional experience in translation, of which preferably two years are self-revised, is essential. Experience in revising translation work performed by other translators is essential. Experience within the framework of an international organization would be an asset. 

Education

Advanced university degree in translation, languages, or a relevant technical field is essential. 

Language Skills

Proficiency in French, which should be the mother tongue or principal language of education, and English, is essential. Working knowledge of Spanish is essential.

Other Skills

Good working knowledge of standard MS Office applications and ability to work with Computer Assisted Translation (CAT) tools, such as eLuna, is essential. Knowledge of maritime terminology would be an asset.

Fixed-term for two years (first year is probationary) with the possibility of further extension, subject to satisfactory performance.
