The Bank for International Settlements, BIS is hiring a Data Scientist / Research Analyst within the Departmental Research Support (DRS) Unit within the Monetary and Economic Department (MED).

This role is based in Basel, however, thanks to our status as an international organization, we can hire globally and welcome applications from candidates of all nationalities and located anywhere in the world. Relocation support is available for the successful candidate and their dependent family members.

This job is available as three years fixed-term.

Purpose of the job:

Under the supervision of a line manager or more senior analysts, you will:

  • Provide research support to MED economists.
  • Bridge the gap between economics, data, and technology.
  • Enhance our analytical capabilities through your expertise.

Principal accountabilities:

  • Support economists in preparing key publications, meeting notes for central bank governors, research papers and senior management presentations.
  • Conduct data analysis, including collection, quality checks, methodology review and data presentation.
  • Develop and maintain databases to streamline internal workflows.
  • Seek out new data sources and advanced analytic methods.
  • Share knowledge and expertise in data and technology.
  • Engage in cross-functional collaborative innovation projects.

Qualifications, skills, and experience:

  • Education: Master’s degree in economics, Finance, Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Experience: Minimum 1 year of professional experience in monetary economics, macroeconomics, financial markets or data science. Mid-level career applicants are encouraged to apply.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in data analysis or programming tools (eg Python, R, MATLAB, Stata). Familiarity with big data technologies and AI techniques would be an advantage.
  • Economic Knowledge: Background in economics or financial markets, or a strong interest in applying technical skills in these areas.
  • Teamwork: Ability to collaborate in a multicultural environment.
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English, with the ability to explain complex concepts to a non-expert audience.
