Purpose for the Post

The Media and Communications Officer  plays a central role in enhancing the Organization’s media and public communication strategy and its digital presence, including the IMO public website, with a strong emphasis on multilingual website content coordination, quality assurance, and the integration of advanced translation technologies. The incumbent is responsible for ensuring inclusive, accurate, and timely dissemination of information  - particularly to Spanish-speaking audiences - through direct media engagement and website management. The incumbent will also support audiovisual and social media outputs. This position contributes directly to the Organization’s commitments to transparency, multilingualism, and inclusivity in public communication.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

1. Multilingual Website Coordination and Translation Technology 
Contribute to strategies for multilingual digital content, including editorial planning, translation coordination, and ensuring appropriate and consistent messaging across all UN language versions of the site.
Ensure multilingual website content meets linguistic quality standards and reflects organizational priorities. 
Monitor translation quality and integrate terminology into the AI glossary database to improve system outputs. Act as the focal point for the AI translation project, and coordinate with the Conference Division and ICTS to enhance automated multilingual translations of web content. 
Provide feedback and analysis on translation effectiveness, and ensure priority statements, high-level press briefings and messages are human-translated when required.
Monitor views and use of multilingual web content using analytics tools and recommend improvements based on data insights and user behaviour.

2. Website and Editorial Management 
Draft, edit, and publish content (media centre, event pages, including IMO awareness days, hot topics, frequently asked questions, specific information webpages, e.g. decarbonization, Red Sea, etc.) in the English section of the public website, in accordance with editorial standards.
Maintain and update English-language web pages, including campaign and thematic content, and liaison with technical divisions. 
Ensure timely and accurate coverage of meetings and key initiatives.

3. Media Relations and Strategic Outreach 
Coordinate liaison with international and regional media, particularly in the Spanish-speaking world, to support the Secretary-General’s engagement with media in his native language.
As and when required, utilize media monitoring tools to  monitor media coverage of the Organization and relevant topics and, as needed, prepare the daily weekday summary of news items for internal and external dissemination.
Coordinate media relations with Spanish-language media outlets, facilitating interviews with the Secretary-General and senior officers.
Coordinate written, in-person, and virtual interviews, ensuring high-level messaging and logistical alignment with the Executive Office of the Secretary-General (EOSG).
Draft media briefing materials in Spanish, as required, and contribute to English-language media preparation and outreach as required.
Contribute to media outreach strategies in Spanish-speaking region to strengthen the Organization’s presence.
Liaison with media for attendance at IMO meetings, including maintaining the media accreditation system. 
Record media interaction in the press relation platform, and use the platforms  analytics tools to provide data for media monitoring reports and inputs into media strategic planning. 

4. Other Communications Duties
Perform other related duties within the Outreach and Communications Office team, as may be required, utilizing the full range of required skills and competencies. Such duties may include, and are not limited to:
Produce, edit, and archive photographic content for communication materials and media use.
Assist in the production of video/audio materials in support of the Video Manager, including multilingual subtitling liaising with Conference Division, as required. 
Contribute to visual storytelling for campaigns and high-profile events.
Draft and schedule Spanish (and coordinate where needed other official language) social media posts; and support English-language posts.
Contribute to multilingual communication strategies for international observances and public awareness campaigns (e.g., Day of the Seafarer, International Day for Women in Maritime).
Use analytics tools to contribute to quarterly reports on media reach, audience engagement, and campaign effectiveness.

Required Competencies

  • Professionalism: Knowledge of communication strategies and public information practices. Demonstrates strong editorial judgment and understanding of international public policy environments.
  • Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both English and Spanish. Ability to tailor messages to diverse audiences and translate complex issues into accessible language.
  • Website editorial: Ability to use content management systems effectively for website content creation, taking end user needs into account.
  • Media Relations and Strategic Outreach: Ability to contribute to media outreach strategies, especially in the Spanish-speaking audiences.
  • Visual and Multimedia Communication: Experience supporting visual storytelling and campaign branding.
  • Data Analysis and Reporting: Ability to use web and social media analytics tools and turning insights into actionable recommendations for content and outreach strategies.

Professional Experience

  • A minimum of 2 years of progressively responsible experience in public information, communications, journalism, or external relations, preferably in an international organization or intergovernmental setting is essential.
  • Experience in managing multilingual content, website content creation and management, media relations, and digital communication platforms, with a focus on Spanish in alignment with broader communication strategies is essential.
  • Experience in translating and adapting key messages for Spanish-speaking audiences across digital platforms, including social media is essential.

Education

University degree  in communications, journalism, international relations, digital communications or related field is essential. 

Language Skills

Fluency in English and Spanish is required.
Knowledge of other official UN languages will be an asset

Other Skills

  • Content management (e.g., WordPress, SharePoint) is essential.
  • Media monitoring tools (e.g., Meltwater, Onclusive) is essential.
  • Multimedia editing (e.g., Adobe Premiere, Avid, Final Cut Pro) is essential.
  • Familiarity with AI translation tools will be an asset
  • Experience in pitching and managing media interviews will be an asset.

Contract Information

Fixed-term for two years (first year is probationary) with the possibility of further extension, subject to satisfactory performance.
