About this position

We are looking for an Energy Sector Expert to serve as the Industry Head for the Energy Sector in the Infrastructure and Energy Division (IEN) within the Industries and Cross-Cutting Themes Department (ICT) at IDB Invest. You will report to the Managing Director of IEN.

ICT is responsible for engaging with clients and partners for the origination, structuring, closing, and supervision of transactions and projects with strong development impact

 IEN, working together with the Regional Divisions in the Regions Department, leads the origination and delivery of operations in Transport, Energy, Water & Sanitation and Social Infrastructure. Our work spans all 26 countries where IDB Invest operates in Latin America and the Caribbean.

What you’ll do

The Industry Head will provide advice and support to the IEN's Managing Director in relation to the design and execution of the Division’s business and action plan for the Energy Sector.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide expert advice to the Managing Director related to the design and execution of IDB Invest’s Energy Sector strategy and investment program, working in close collaboration with investment teams to ensure alignment with institutional priorities.
  • Supporting the Managing Director and the Transaction Teams during all phases of the execution of Energy Sector projects, from the prospecting stage through origination, structuring, negotiation, approval, closing and portfolio monitoring.
  • Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with leading global and regional clients to generate new investment opportunities. Actively identify and pursue strategic partnerships with different stakeholders that expand IDB Invest’s impact and presence in the Energy Sector.
  • Support sectoral engagement with IDB public sector teams and the Regions Department to support governments and authorities in identifying and addressing regulatory and enabling infrastructure gaps.
  • Interacting with the IDB Public Sector area with a view to add value to Governments and authorities, ensuring that the applicable regulatory framework helps the projects become bankable.
  • Serve as primary point of contact from IEN with the IDB Group PPP Unit in relation to PPPs in the Energy Sector.
  • Perform industry and market research in the Energy Sector to support business origination and execution, ensuring alignment with IDB Invest’s investment strategy.
  • Review eligibility and investment proposals, offering well-informed recommendations. Actively contribute to investment decision meetings by addressing inquiries and providing sector-specific insights to guide the decision-making process.
  • Coordinate with internal development partners to address sector-specific challenges, including environmental, social, credit, and reputational risks, as well as development impact.
  • Providing technical advice and supporting the development of IDBG Country Strategies and the IDB Invest’s multi-year Business Plans in relation to the Energy Sector to help identify and overcome specific institutional and regulatory issues pertinent to the sector.
  • Keeping abreast of industry dynamics, innovation being introduced in the market by competitors and of developments in Latin America and the Caribbean that could impact the Energy Sector. Sharing market intelligence across the segment and within the IDBG as relevant.

What you'll need

Education: An advanced degree (at least Master’s, MBA, or equivalent) in Finance, Business Administration, Engineering, International Development and/or other relevant fields. Specialization in infrastructure development and/or transaction management is desirable.   

Experience: You have at least 8 years of relevant professional experience in Energy Sector with proven well-established relationships at C-level management of key industry players and other stakeholders. Confirmed experience in a similar role in an investment, advisory firm, or development bank is essential, as well as proven strong client relationship experience and skills. Sound knowledge of current industry and sector operating parameters, to permit comparative cost analysis and benchmarking, as well as industry trends, risks and opportunities.

Languages: Proficiency in Spanish and English, spoken and written, is required. Additional knowledge of French and Portuguese would be considered a plus.

Consanguinity: You have no family members (up to the fourth degree of consanguinity and second degree of affinity, including spouse) working at the IDB, IDB Invest, or IDB Lab.

Type of contract and duration

International staff contract, 36 months initially, renewable upon mutual agreement.
