Duties and Responsibilities

Org. Setting and Reporting The internship is in the Campaigns and Country Operations Division of the Department of Global Communications, in the Peace and Security Section. The Peace and Security Section promotes the United Nations work on priority peace and security-related issues, including conflict prevention, peacemaking, peacekeeping, peacebuilding, disarmament and counter-terrorism through the design and implementation of global communications strategies; production and dissemination of public information materials; and outreach activities. The internship is for three (3) months with an opportunity for extension up to six (6) months, depending on the needs of the Division and availability of the candidate. The internship is unpaid and full-time. Interns work five days a week (35 hours) in person or remotely under the supervision of a staff member in the office to which they are assigned. The intern will report to the Chief of Peace and Security Section. Responsibilities The selected intern may perform some of the following functions: - Provide editorial support for the new peace and security website, including drafting content around issues concerning conflict prevention, peacekeeping, peacebuilding, disarmament, counter-terrorism and others, under the supervision of the staff member leading the project. - Conduct research on pertinent and relevant issues that can be developed into explainers, infographics, data blogs as well as web and social media content. - Assist with posting content and keeping the website updated with latest content and assets. Liaise with UN Social Media to develop multilingual assets. - Support the research, editorial content production, communications and outreach for the Section’s current campaigns: Hear Us. Act Now for a Peaceful World, and Service and Sacrifice. - Organize meetings, draft notes and oversee logistics in coordination with the web development and design teams. - Keep web development documents, including wireframes and mockups, organized and up to date. - When the opportunity arises, help with the development and drafting of other communications materials, including plans, press releases and presentations, under the supervision of relevant colleagues.

Qualifications/special skills

Education Please note that to qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or, b. Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent). Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage. Competencies Communication: Speaks and writes clearly and effectively. Job Specific Qualifications Applicants must also: - Be computer literate in standard software applications; knowledge of content management system, information management and creative applications such as Trello, Canva, Drupal, Premium, Illustrator and Photoshop skills are desirable. - Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter. - Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.
