Duties and Responsibilities
The UN Health Care Center is tasked with delivering both core and non-core health services to all United Nations staff members and their eligible dependents stationed in Ethiopia. This mandate encompasses a wide range of responsibilities, including supporting staff and their families during various disasters and pandemics, managing medical evacuations, and undertaking other activities that contribute to staff well-being. The role of Internist includes clinical duties, emergency response, and disaster preparedness activities to safeguard the health and safety of UN staff and their dependents. Under the overall guidance of the Chief Medical Officer (CMO), the Medical Officer- Internist is responsible for the following duties and responsibilities: • Conduct outpatient consultations for UNHCC clients during assigned hours, Monday through Friday, as specified for each specialist. • Promptly attend to emergency cases presenting at UNHCC • Perform entry, periodic, and exit medical examinations in accordance with standard UN protocols. • Provide consultations with empathy and professionalism, utilizing available laboratory, radiological, and other investigative resources at UNHCC and in Addis Ababa as needed to ensure accurate diagnosis and effective case management. • Interpret findings from patient discussions, tests, and examinations, clearly explaining conditions and recommended management plans to patients in understandable terms. • Assist patients in accessing appropriate treatments, coordinating with the pharmacist to confirm medication availability at the UNHCC pharmacy or other city pharmacies, and, if needed, discuss special orders with the pharmacist and Chief Medical Officer (CMO). • Maintain strict patient confidentiality and uphold ethical standards. Do not share medical information for research, education, or any other purposes without prior written patient consent. • Initiate medical evacuations for advanced diagnostics or treatment by discussing cases with the CMO, who will convene the medical board and coordinate required approvals with the UN-MSD in New York or designated UN Medical Directors. • Communicate with the CMO, Deputy, or head nurse regarding cases referred to external facilities to ensure appropriate follow-up. • Prepare detailed medical reports for referrals and medical approvals by various UN Medical Directors, including employment-related medical examinations for internists (entry, periodic, exit). • Document case information in the Earthmed electronic medical record system to facilitate medical clearance for travel or reassignment within the organization. • Collaborate with other physicians and paramedical staff as needed to finalize patient diagnoses and treatment plans. • Follow up on UN Staff and dependents referred and admitted to different hospitals and coordinates care with treating physicians • Provide medical coverage and standby duty for conferences when assigned • Author educational newsletters in internal medicine to enhance public health awareness among the UN community. • Participate in monthly continuing medical education sessions and be prepared to research and present on internal medicine topics to UNHCC personnel. • Deliver public lectures to UN staff and dependents on emerging health concerns or general health topics of interest. • Demonstrate a collaborative team spirit and punctuality. Notify UNHCC administration at least three weeks in advance of any schedule changes, or as soon as possible in exceptional cases, to ensure adequate coverage.
Qualifications/special skills
Education Medical degree (MD or equivalent that qualifies the holder for registration as a licensed medical practitioner (MD, MBBS, MBChB, or equivalent) with a specialty in Internal Medicine is required The candidate must hold current, unrestricted registration with the medical licensing authority of Ethiopia Training in emergency medicine (such as BLS, ALS, PHTLS, or equivalent) is required. Experience Minimum of Seven years of work experience as a Medical Doctor out of which minimum 3 years as a specialist in internal medicine is required. Familiarity with electronic medical records is required. Emergency Training on BLS, ALS, PHTLS or Equivalent is mandatory Work experience in international organizations is an advantage. Experience as instructor in emergency training (BLS, First AID, ALS) is an advantage Required Skills/Competencies Professionalism: Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of clinical, occupational, and tropical medicine. Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the job advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage

Special Notice: 1. Although this position falls under ECA where the recruitment and selection process is managed; the contract administration will be handled through United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) under contract term of "Local Individual Contractor Agreement". 2. The UN Clinic is working hours are 24/7 which are covered under 12 hours shift-based schedules based on organizational needs. The selected candidate is expected to work maximum 37.5 hours per week with 12 hours per one shift. Any extra working hours will be covered through compensatory time-off (CTO); No overtime payment will be applicable. 3. Evaluation of qualified candidates will consist of a technical assessment test followed by a competency-based interview. 4. The Selected Candidate can be deployed to other UNHCC satellite clinics as per organizational need. 5.
