Managing Editor (Part-Time: 75%)*

in Bonn

The position is to be filled as soon as possible, with a one year contract as a parental leave cover. Employment location will be Bonn, Germany.

Welthungerhilfe coordinates and manages its communications through a central newsroom. This transparent organizational model ensures that we communicate our topics in an integrated and consistent way across all channels — thereby implementing our strategic goals in day-to-day operations. The agile and flexible newsroom structure enables a high level of responsiveness, particularly in humanitarian crises. Our way of working is characterized by short coordination processes, open dialogue, and clear, flat hierarchies.

For our newsroom, we are seeking a Managing Editor as parental leave cover, who together with a second Managing Editor will form a strong tandem and lead the newsroom with experience and enthusiasm.

Your responsibilities

  • As Managing Editor, you provide professional leadership to the newsroom and orchestrate our internal and external communications.

  • You ensure integrated messaging across all channels and support consistent branding.

  • In your interface role, you take on both process management and editorial responsibilities.

  • You translate strategic topics into day-to-day operations, prioritize content, and lead editorial meetings.

  • As a central interface, you ensure smooth workflows between the teams involved and the efficient use of our resources.

  • You are responsible for fast and coordinated communication in humanitarian crises and natural disasters.

  • You safeguard the quality and tone of our content, ensuring it meets Welthungerhilfe’s high standards and branding requirements.

  • In addition, you use data and analytics to measure the success of our communication activities and continuously develop and improve them.

Your profile

  • Completed training in journalism (degree and/or traineeship/volontariat) and/or a degree in communications.

  • Extensive journalistic experience as well as practical experience in leading editorial teams and coordinating content processes.

  • Experience in marketing communications and a strong sense for effectively promoting relevant content to specific target audiences.

  • Strategic thinking and a strong understanding of channels, target groups, and cross-media communication.

  • A high level of oversight and decision-making ability — even under time pressure.

  • Strong organizational and communication skills, confident writing style, and a good eye for visual language.

  • Ability to collaborate in a solution-oriented manner with diverse stakeholders and to consistently advocate for communication goals.

  • Willingness to work flexibly, particularly in crisis situations.

  • You recognize the growing value of data in your field and are eager to build your awareness and skills to incorporate data-informed approaches into your work.

  • Very good written and spoken German and English skills.
