Since its inception in 1972, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has been the global authority that sets the environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

Context
The incumbent will support the implementation of UNEP’s internal communications strategies, reaching more than 3,000 personnel in Nairobi and across 42 global duty stations, including regional and country offices. They will manage both virtual and in-person events, such as the monthly Global Townhall chaired by the Executive Director and moderated by the Chief of Staff on Microsoft Teams, as well as coordinate dialogues aligned with UNEP’s three core pillars: climate, nature, and pollution, and commemorative activities for major UN International Days. They will develop promotional materials and run-of-show documents, liaise with vendors to procure branded event materials, oversee event budgets, and provide moderation support when required. Additionally, they will collaborate closely with colleagues to organize webinars, trainings, and meetings, while producing content for internal communication platforms, including weekly newsletters, the UNEP intranet, and iSeek.
Task description
Under the direct supervision of the Chief of Digital Strategy, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:
Content and activity implementation:
• Plan and implement content and activities against the internal communication
strategy and defined objectives and targets, tracking progress on the status of strategy implementation and resource mobilization;
• Work in close coordination with all UNEP offices, divisions, regions, and associates.
Strategy implementation:
• Implement, monitor, and revise an internal communication strategy for UNEP, undertaking broad consultation with stakeholders as required, and advising and ensuring appropriate tools and channels are used throughout the organization in accordance with appropriate governance/guidance.
Event production and communication support:
• Support the planning and execution of communications-related events.
• Perform the function of a communication officer and undertake other duties asassigned and when required.
UNEP and UN system communication coordination:
• Support the coordination of communication mandates and activities between UNEP and the rest of the UN system of organisations, including oversight of shared tools like SharePoint and Trello.
• Support newsletter work related to defined audiences, with a focus on staff and key moments, such as the UN Environment Assembly and World Environment Day.
• Perform other relevant duties as assigned.
Furthermore, UN Volunteers are required to:
• Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and taking an active part in UNV activities (for instance, in events that mark International Volunteer Day);
• Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country;
• Reflect on the type and quality of voluntary action that they are undertaking, including
participation in ongoing reflection activities;
• Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.;
• Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers;
• Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible
