The Internship Programme aims at attracting talented students and graduates who have a specific interest in, or whose studies have covered, areas relevant to IOM programmes and activities. Interns must be between 20 and 36 years old and should have less than two years of relevant working experience. 

 
In general, the Internship Programme aims at attracting talented students and graduates who:

 
a) have a specific interest in, or whose studies have covered, areas relevant to IOM programmes and activities;
b) are holding a scholarship for internship placements in international organizations and/or for whom internship is required to complete their studies; or
c) are sponsored by governmental/non governmental institutions and/or academia to work in specific areas relevant to both IOM and the sponsor.
d) are either enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent) or have graduated in the last 12 months.
e) are between 20 and 36 years of age.

 

Background Information

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is the United Nations migration agency and works closely with governmental, intergovernmental, and non-governmental partners to promote humane and orderly migration. Effective communication and knowledge sharing are core enabling functions across IOM’s global operations, supporting programme delivery, visibility, accountability, and donor engagement.

Within IOM Papua New Guinea, the Programme Support Unit provides cross-cutting support to programmes through communications, reporting, visibility, and coordination. The Graphic and Multimedia Intern will support these functions through visual and digital content creation, while engaging in a structured learning experience aligned with IOM’s Global Internship Framework.


The Intern will work under the overall supervision of the Head of Programme Support Unit and the in close coordination with Media and Communications Consultant.

Responsibilities

A. Support to Organizational Communications and Knowledge Management

  • Support documentation of IOM activities through photography and basic videography during meetings, workshops, trainings, field visits, and community engagements;

  • Assist with organizing, cataloguing, and archiving multimedia files according to internal systems;

  • Support preparation of visual content for reports, presentations, and knowledge products.

B. Multimedia Content Creation

  • Edit photographs (cropping, colour correction, resizing) using Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, or similar tools;

  • Assist with basic video editing tasks using Adobe Premiere Pro or equivalent software, including trimming clips, adding captions, and logos;

  • Design visual materials using Canva (required), such as: 

  • Social media graphics;
  • Flyers, posters, banners, and simple infographics;
  • Ensure that all visual products comply with IOM branding, visibility, and ethical communication standards.

C. Digital and Social Media Support

  • Support preparation and scheduling of content for IOM Papua New Guinea’s official social media platforms (Facebook, LinkedIn, X);

  • Assist in monitoring basic engagement metrics (reach, interactions);

  • Contribute to the preparation of simple monthly summaries of social media performance.

D. Administrative and Operational Support

  • Assist with logistical and administrative tasks related to communications activities (e.g., meetings, workshops, events);

  • Attend meetings when requested and support note-taking and follow-up, under guidance;

  • Provide general support to the Programme Support Unit during campaigns, missions, and high-visibility activities.

    Learning and Professional Development

  • Participate in onthejob learning under structured supervision;
  • Receive feedback and mentoring to strengthen technical and professional skills;
  • Gain exposure to UN standards on communications, visibility, ethics, safeguarding, and confidentiality;
  • Apply academic knowledge in a practical operational environment.

    Learning Outcomes

  • By the end of the internship, the Intern is expected to have:
  • Gained practical experience in photography, graphic design, videography, and multimedia editing;

  • Developed understanding of IOM’s communication workflows and UN visibility requirements;

  • Improved skills in digital communications, teamwork, and professional conduct;

  • Acquired working knowledge of ethical representation and data protection principles.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Recent graduate or final‑year student in Communications, Media Studies, Journalism, Graphic Design, Multimedia, or a related field.

  • Proficiency in Canva (required);

  • Basic knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, Premiere Pro, or similar tools is an asset;

  • Ability to operate a camera for photography and basic videography;

  • Familiarity with major social media platforms (Facebook, LinkedIn, X).

Languages

For this internship, fluency in English and Tok Pisin is required. 

Proficiency of language(s) required will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.

Notes

Depending on experience and location, interns are granted a small monthly stipend to help offset costs. Interns benefiting from an internship allowance or scholarship granted by their university or other sponsoring body that includes financial remuneration or credits for coursework will not be eligible for the stipend.

IOM covers Interns against occupational accidents and illnesses under the Compensation Plan (CP), free of charge, for the duration of the internship. IOM does not provide evacuation or medical insurance for reasons related to non-occupational accidents and illnesses. Interns are responsible for their own medical insurance for non-occupational accident or illness and will be required to provide written proof of such coverage before commencing work.
