Overall purpose of the role
The Protection Coordinator will be an integral part of DRC’s protection team, ensuring that area protection teams and partners are supported with the relevant training, coaching, mentoring and capacity building to implement high quality protection interventions in line with DRC programmatic policies and SOPs. Additionally, the Protection Specialist will support in developing technical tools and tailoring exiting ones to partner-led implementation.

Responsibilities 

Capacity building and training to DRC protection teams

• In coordination with the Country Protection Manager and other specialists, conduct quality benchmark monitoring for protection interventions in selected areas and facilitate self-assessments to identify key gaps and capacity strengthening needs.
• Deliver tailored capacity building support to area teams to address identified gaps, particularly in relation to referrals, IPA, and case management, through trainings, workshops, one-to-one mentoring, coaching, and supervision.
• In collaboration with Protection Managers in selected areas, regularly review documentation of protection interventions to identify quality risks and capacity gaps; provide coaching and mentoring to relevant team members and progressively hand over quality assurance responsibilities to designated area protection staff.
• Based on existing global and DRC internal tools and guidelines, contextualize and update Case Management coaching and supervision guidelines and tools, and lead their roll-out across area protection teams.
• Contribute to cross-sectoral program integration efforts by strengthening linkages between protection case management, GBV prevention and response, and youth-focused protection programming.
• Provide technical guidance to ensure protection interventions are inclusive, age-appropriate, and responsive to the specific needs and risks faced by adolescents and young people, including those exposed to GBV.
• Provide support to other capacity building initiatives as requested.

Engagement and capacity sharing with partners

• In coordination with DRC’s Partnership Unit, Area Managers and Area Protection Manager, and under the supervision of the Country Protection Manager, the Protection Coordinator conducts protection technical capacity assessments of current and prospective partners to inform the partnership development process (scope of work, risk matrix) and develop corresponding capacity building plans.
• In collaboration with area protection teams, deliver trainings and capacity sharing initiatives to partners in line with agreed capacity sharing plans, with a focus on quality case management, safe referrals, GBV risk mitigation, and youth-sensitive approaches.
• Support Protection Managers to conduct regular follow-up meetings and field visits with partners to monitor quality of implementation and contribute to the effective implementation of capacity sharing plans.
• Based on partners’ ongoing and planned programming, coordinate with other Protection Specialists to identify key areas where partners require technical guidance and support to meet national and global protection standards, including GBV and child/youth protection standards.
• In collaboration with the PIM Specialist, MEAL, and Partnership teams, support partners in the roll-out and use of relevant PIM and MEAL tools and processes, ensuring protection accountability and safe feedback mechanisms are in place.
• Provide targeted technical support to implementing partners to strengthen GBV integration within protection programming for young people, including safe identification, referral pathways, survivor-centered approaches, and coordination with specialized GBV actors.

Protection Technical leadership in Youth Livelihoods Consortia Management Unit (CMU) to support program integration

• Actively participate as a technical member of the Youth Livelihoods Consortia Management Unit (CMU), contributing to strategic discussions, harmonization of tools and approaches across agencies, and continuous improvement of community based protection activities, capacity building and case management quality across areas and partners.
• Support the integration of GBV risk mitigation and response within case management services, particularly for adolescents and young people, in line with DRC and inter-agency standards.
• Strengthen coordination and integration between protection, GBV, child protection, and youth-focused interventions to ensure coherent, complementary, and safe service delivery for affected populations.
• Contribute to the development and dissemination of guidance, tools, and learning products related to integrated protection programming, in collaboration with relevant technical specialists.
• Lead protection technical working group to facilitate integration and coordination across partners and areas, ensuring smooth implementation of standard operating procedures (SoPs) with a focus on youth

Qualifications, experience and technical competencies 

• Masters' degree in relevant field
• 3-5 years of experience in Protection programming within a humanitarian context
• Knowledge and experience implementing protection programming in the areas of general Protection, GBV, and MHPSS.
• Previous proven experience in programs implemented through local partners or in remote management.
• Proven experience in capacity building and training of national staff and local partners.
• Strong computer skills, including Microsoft office
• Experience working in Sudan or similar operating contexts is highly desirable.
• Strong facilitation, training, and coaching skills using in-person and online modalities
• Excellent analytical and communication skills, both written and verbal.
• Ability to work independently and manage time effectively under tight deadlines

Languages: 

• Proficiency in written and spoken English
• Arabic is highly desired

Conditions
Contract:    One-year contract with possibility of extension, subject to funding and performance. Salary and conditions in accordance with the Danish Refugee Council’s Terms of Employment for International staff or under terms of employment for National Staff in Sudan.  This position is graded at NM.G
