Established in 1951, IOM is part of the United Nations System as the leading inter-governmental organization promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all.

Operational for over 45 years in country, IOM Indonesia supports the efforts by the Government of Republic of Indonesia in promoting safe, orderly and regular migration working with a range of partners.  IOM Indonesia is engaged in several areas, including: Counter-Trafficking, Labour Mobility and Social Inclusion, Disasters, Climate and Resilience, Immigration and Border Governance, Refugee Care, Migration Health, Migration Policy and Data Hub, and Resettlement and Voluntary Returns.

IOM plays a key role in addressing the impacts of climate-related and other crises by providing life-saving humanitarian support and working alongside the government to build systems that enable long-term recovery and resilience. With a strong foundation in the humanitarian-development-peace nexus, IOM supports communities to prevent displacement, reduce disaster risks, and implement sustainable solutions that serve both displaced populations and local communities. Leveraging its migration governance expertise, IOM also works to expand safe migration opportunities promoting regular pathways through strengthened border systems, labour mobility schemes, inclusive services, and institutional capacity building. Its efforts further extend to tackling irregular migration by supporting national efforts to counter human trafficking, migrant smuggling, and other forms of transnational organized crime, while delivering comprehensive protection, return and reintegration support to vulnerable migrants.

IOM works alongside government partners at the national and sub-national level, civil society organizations, and media to carry out preventive measures in strengthening and broadening public awareness on critical issues related to safe migration and the risks of engaging in smuggling practices and trafficking in person that lure migrants into undertaking perilous irregular migration journeys. In addition, IOM’s CT programming in Indonesia looks to further support management by offering policy and technical advice to national governments, civil society organizations, and the private sector; supporting the development of policies, legislation, and administrative structures, including addressing emerging trends.
