Work for the IMF. Work for the World.

The Communications Department (COM) is the Fund’s strategic center for communication. It develops and coordinates the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) external and internal communications strategy, shapes the IMF’s key messages, advises IMF Management and staff on how best to convey key messages, and monitors and responds to what people outside the IMF say about the institution and its activity.

The Policy Communications Division (COMPC) works with other COM divisions and the Front Office to develop and disseminate IMF messages to a variety of audiences, including policymakers, academics, media, civil society, students, and the educated lay public. The Division creates and publishes content on several platforms: the IMF Blog, Finance & Development Magazine (a quarterly flagship print and digital publication), Country Focus (web-based articles on IMF’s policy advice to its membership), the IMF’s Factsheet Series, as well as multimedia products such as podcasts and videos and social media products and campaigns. The Division also monitors and assesses the impact of products, using data analytics.

Under the general supervision of the Division’s managers, this contractual position’s specific responsibilities will include:

  • Writing and editing compelling magazine-style articles, blog posts, opinion pieces, and newsletters.

  • Creating multi-media content: from drafting high-quality video scripts and using data visualization, to finding innovative ways of producing and distributing digital content.

  • Writing with speed on wide-ranging and complex topics, with a focus on economics and financial markets.

  • Developing clear and concise content that resonates not just with technical experts, but also with broader, non-expert audiences. This will entail explaining the IMF’s work, relevance and other complex issues in plain, elegant English.

  • Using the latest AI tools to ensure efficient production processes, high-impact storytelling, and continuous innovation.

  • Contributing to other divisional and departmental efforts, as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

Educational development, typically acquired by the completion of an advanced university degree, or equivalent, in Communications, International Relations, Languages, or a related field, supplemented by a minimum of four (4) years of relevant professional experience, is required; or a university degree, or equivalent, and ten (10) years of relevant professional experience are required.

Desired Qualifications:

  • The ideal candidate must be a digital native, combining strong journalistic writing and editing expertise with multi-media experience and proven AI skills.

  • Excellent editorial judgment and the ability to translate technical material for broader audiences are critical. Proficiency in languages other than English is a plus.

  • Deep understanding of global economic issues as well as the IMF’s role and mandate are essential. Intellectual curiosity about economics and finance is a must.

  • An ability to negotiate effectively and be a team player, as well as openness to feedback and excellent interpersonal skills, are essential.

This is a one-year contractual appointment. Contractual appointments at the IMF are renewable for up to four years of cumulative contractual service, pending incumbent's performance, budget availability, and continuous business need.
