Malteser International (MI) has been working in Nigeria since 2017. In Northeast Nigeria and more specifically in Borno, Taraba and Adamawa States, MI is currently active in the WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene), Protection and FNSL sectors, including the MPCA for saving and improving the lives of both the IDP/refugee populations as well as the host communities.
For our work in Katsina State, Nigeria, Malteser International is looking for a qualified Area Coordinator – National Position.
The Area Coordinator provides strong leadership for MI’s programme in Katsina, ensuring sustained support to staff in planning and implementing WASH, MPCA, and other emerging needs. They ensure understanding and compliance with international and donor standards and facilitate strong coordination among MI staff to achieve programme deliverables. The role also includes maintaining close coordination with all stakeholders, monitoring the overall context, and escalating issues to the Senior Coordination and Management Team.
Your responsibilities:
- Lead the development and execution of realistic, detailed implementation plans aligned with project objectives, ensuring smooth and timely delivery of activities.
- Oversee project monitoring plans, ensure achievement of performance indicators, maintain high programme quality, donor compliance, and beneficiary accountability mechanisms.
- Monitor contextual and security developments, conduct shared analysis with partners, and escalate critical issues to Senior Management for decision-making.
- Ensure adherence to donor and MI operational guidelines, including reporting, finance, logistics, and HR compliance in coordination with relevant departments.
- Represent MI in sector and coordination meetings, maintain strategic relationships with NGOs, UN, government, and communities, and support visibility and future project development.
- Manage and supervise project staff, strengthen team coordination and performance, and ensure adherence to organizational standards and policies.
- Oversee area programme budgets, monitor expenditure against approved budgets, and collaborate with finance to ensure sound financial management.
Your profile:
- University Master's Degree in social sciences, business, or technical disciplines and a minimum 5 years’ experience with an INGO in a developing or humanitarian context
- Strong experience in project management, coordination, and partnership management, including leading diverse operational and programme teams.
- Proven ability to manage field teams, supervise multidisciplinary staff, and work effectively with partners to deliver innovative programmes.
- Demonstrated analytical, systems-thinking, and decision-making skills with the ability to see the big picture and provide sound judgment in complex contexts.
- Experience in budget oversight, security and safety management, and familiarity with logistics, procurement, finance, and HR procedures.
- Strong communication abilities with proven capacity to work effectively with local governments, NGOs, UN agencies, and community stakeholders; contextual knowledge of Northwest Nigeria is an advantage.
- Proactive, solutions-oriented, results-driven, committed to MI values and standards, and able to perform effectively in stressful, hostile, and deep-field environments.
