The International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) Communications Department is looking for a Communications Officer to work in its Stakeholder Engagement Division.

The Communications Department (COM) is the Fund’s strategic center for communication. It develops and coordinates the IMF’s external and internal communications strategy, shapes the IMF’s key messages, advises IMF Management and staff on how best to convey key messages and engage key stakeholders, and monitors and responds to what people outside the IMF say about the institution and its activity.

The Stakeholder Engagement Division in COM (COMSE) promotes understanding of, and support for, the IMF through two-way engagement with the public and key stakeholders, including civil society, labor unions, think tanks, parliamentarians, youth and academics. The division disseminates information about the Fund, and initiates and facilitates dialogue to build relationships with these and other stakeholders and umbrella organizations. COMSE advises on and plans Management’s public engagements, in close coordination with departments and Management. It also manages the Fund’s Giving Program.

Key Responsibilities:

Under the general supervision of the COMSE Division Chief and Deputy Division Chiefs, key responsibilities for the Communications Officer include:

  • Contribute to the implementation of the Fund's communication strategy, by devising and delivering effective engagement strategies to external stakeholders that focus on the work of the Fund. 

  • Support the Fund’s policy and country work, through stakeholder engagement at the global, regional and country level.

  • Build and maintain relationships with key external stakeholders and bring external perspectives into the Fund to better inform the Fund’s policy and country work, including through influencer tracking and impact analysis.

  • Manage the planning, logistics, and delivery of engagement activities with external stakeholders, collaborating with other IMF departments, other organizations, and external partners and service providers.

  • Prepare briefs for IMF Management or senior staff for their stakeholder engagements, including talking points and key messages, choreography notes, biographies and relevant briefs in coordination with other COM divisions and IMF departments.

  • Monitor and track stakeholder opinion, feedback, and statements in relation to the Fund and its work and leverage this in communications strategies and planning.

  • Build close and effective working relationships with colleagues across COM and in other Fund departments to help support the Fund’s stakeholder engagement objectives and priorities.

  • Actively participate in COM’s cross-cutting ‘matrix’ teams in support of institutional and departmental communication priorities.  

  • Contribute to other divisional and departmental efforts, as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

Educational development, typically acquired by the completion of an advanced university degree, or equivalent, in Communications, International Relations, Languages, or a related field; or a university degree, or equivalent, supplemented by a minimum of six (6) years of relevant professional experience; or a minimum of two (2) years of relevant experience at grade A08, or equivalent, is required.

Desired Qualifications:

  • A proven track record of relationship building and engagement with a wide range of non-media stakeholders, at a global, regional and local level on issues relevant to the IMF’s mandate.

  • Strong project management, negotiation, influencing, and planning skills, with the ability to think creatively about communications products, technologies, and impact.

  • Excellent writing and editing skills, as well as digital communications, are essential.

  • Good understanding of the IMF’s goals, priorities, and operations, as well as knowledge of global economy and financial issues. Ability to analyze the latest global and local political economic developments and create or adapt communications and engagement plans as needed.

  • Strong drive, self-motivation, good decision-making skills and sound judgement.

  • Be able to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines.

  • Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills, with a collaborative working style and an openness to feedback.

This is a one-year contractual appointment. Contractual appointments at the IMF are renewable for up to four years of cumulative contractual service, pending incumbent's performance, budget availability, and continuous business need.
