ABOUT THE JOB

The ICRC Legal Corporate Adviser Unit seeks a competent Associate Legal Counsel to join our team in Kyiv. The Associate Legal Counsel will provide internal legal support and guidance, ensuring legal compliance across various operational areas. Working closely with senior legal professionals, the role focuses on delivering expert advice on a wide range of legal matters, including but not limited to human resources, logistics, procurement, administration, operations, governance, fundraising, intellectual property, and regulatory issues. A key responsibility of the Associate Legal Counsel is to provide specialized legal guidance on data protection matters, employment and contractual questions, and compliance with local and international laws. The role also involves managing legal claims, assessing organizational liabilities, and supporting the ICRC’s broader activities.

YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct legal research on regulations, statutes, and case law, staying up-to-date with changes in national laws
  • Analyze and interpret laws and regulations, providing accurate and timely legal advice
  • Review, draft, and negotiate contracts, ensuring compliance with legal requirements, ICRC policies, and organizational standards
  • Assist in developing compliance policies, supporting risk management, and monitoring adherence to regulatory requirements across ICRC operations
  • Prepare, maintain, and manage legal files, ensuring proper documentation and coordination with the Legal Counsel and Office of Legal Corporate Affairs for a centralized repository
  • Support the resolution of legal disputes, liaise with external counsel when needed, and contribute to special legal projects or initiatives as assigned
  • Supports training to empower ICRC staff on legal compliance, contract management and other best practices in handling legal matters

ABOUT YOU

To be successful as Associate Legal Counsel in the Legal Corporate Adviser (LCA) Unit, you should possess the following qualifications and experiences and have the following characteristics: 

  • Ukrainian citizenship or permanent residence permit in Ukraine
  • Advanced university degree in law (B.A. minimum, M.A. ideally, or LLM would be an asset) 
  • Typically, 6-9 years of professional experience
  • Minimum three (3) years of experience as a corporate legal adviser required, in particular with contractual practice or HR/employment-related practice or business law
  • Experience in the legal sector with international organization or non-governmental organization (NGO) entities a strong asset
  • Excellent command (written and spoken) of English and Ukrainian
  • Advanced computer skills
  • Self-motivated with a strong commitment to teamwork and humanitarian principles
  • Flexible, enthusiastic, and willing to learn
  • Ability to work independently, as well as effectively under supervision
  • Ability to organize and prioritize multiple tasks
  • Ability to work within a diverse team and establish and maintain good working relations in a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural, and multi-disciplinary environment
