Organizational Context:

The Head of Supply Chain leads WFP Malawi’s integrated supply chain portfolio, overseeing logistics, procurement, food systems, engineering, food safety and quality, emergency preparedness, and shared services. Staff at this level manage complex operations, lead diverse technical teams, and partner extensively with government, private sector, and UN and humanitarian and development actors.

In Malawi, supply chain is central to WFP’s mandate: delivering the right assistance, to the right people, at the right time — to accelerate progress toward Zero Hunger. Supply chain is both a logistics backbone and a strategic enabler of food systems transformation, national capacity strengthening, emergency readiness, and sustainable market development.

Job Purpose:

To lead the design, coordination, and execution of an integrated supply chain that ensures timely, efficient, accountable, and sustainable delivery of assistance while strengthening national systems and driving transformation across Malawi’s food and market systems.

ACCOUNTABILITIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead implementation of the WFP Malawi Supply Chain Strategy, ensuring alignment with CSP outcomes and national priorities.
  • Position supply chain as a catalyst for Zero Hunger by integrating logistics, procurement, food systems, CBT markets, and emergency readiness.
  • Drive digital transformation, green logistics, innovation, and performance improvement across all supply chain pillars. Manage end‑to‑end supply chain operations, ensuring cost‑efficient, reliable delivery of food and non‑food assistance.
  • Lead high‑level partnership engagement with government institutions, donors, private sector, UN agencies, humanitarian and development partners, academia, and farmer organizations to co‑design supply chain solutions, mobilize investment, strengthen national systems, and align multi‑stakeholder efforts in support of Zero Hunger.
  • Oversee supply chains supporting CBT through market assessments, retailer engagement, and market‑linked logistics.
  • Ensure compliance, risk mitigation, food safety and quality, and strong internal controls.
  • Lead strategic and sustainable procurement, emphasizing local and regional sourcing and supplier development.
  • Strengthen market systems, structured market access for smallholder farmers, post‑harvest loss reduction, and private‑sector partnerships.
  • Work with government and national institutions to strengthen national systems and capacities.
  • Lead planning, pre‑positioning, logistics cluster coordination, and national readiness for climate‑induced and humanitarian shocks.
  • Streamline shared logistics, procurement, and engineering services on a cost‑recovery basis to support government and partners.
  • Lead and develop multidisciplinary teams; promote an inclusive, high‑performance, learning‑oriented culture.
  • Any other related duties as required

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

Education:

Advanced university degree in economics, logistics and supply chain, social sciences, international relations, or related field; or the equivalent combination of education.

Experience Knowledge & Skills:

Minimum 8 years of progressively responsible supply chain leadership experience. Experience leading complex operations, strategic planning, and national system strengthening. Proven capacity in partnership building with government, private sector, and humanitarian/development partners. Experience with emergency operations, market‑linked supply chains, CBT, and local/regional procurement. Demonstrated experience in innovation, digital tools, optimization, and cost‑efficiency initiatives.
