Job Highlight

The Communications Intern will gain valuable experience supporting the strategic creation and management of content for the PDO across digital and internal platforms. The intern will also contribute to the logistical and technical coordination of PDO's events.
The Intern opportunity has one available position: Local Intern, For Kenyan nationals. This position will report to the Partnership and Development Officer.

About the Region

The UNOPS Africa Regional Office, based in Nairobi, Kenya, oversees the delivery of over 250 projects across 40 countries, with a focus on fragile and conflict-affected settings. Supported by more than 1,000 personnel across five multi-country offices—spanning North, West, Central, Eastern and Southern Africa, and the Horn of Africa—the office advances national priorities through strategic initiatives in Climate Action, Health, Infrastructure, Peace and Security, Middle-Income Country Support, and Small Island Developing States (SIDS). The Regional Office provides strategic leadership, operational support, and oversight in key areas including Partnerships, Communications, Management and Oversight, Infrastructure and Project Management, Health and Safety, and Security. By promoting excellence in project delivery, fostering knowledge sharing, and driving continuous improvement, the office contributes to sustainable infrastructure, transparent resource management, and a better quality of life for communities across the continent.

About the Country/Multi-Country Office

Based in Nairobi, UNOPS East and Southern Africa supports sustainable development across 14 countries, including Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Somalia, Tanzania, Zambia, Zanzibar, and Zimbabwe. Since 1995, UNOPS has expanded its footprint in Kenya, delivering services in project management, infrastructure, procurement, and financial management. Across the region, the office implements diverse, partner-funded initiatives that respond to national priorities. In Mozambique, this includes delivering specialized equipment (EU), supporting health services (UNICEF), promoting agro-processing (KOICA), and advancing peacebuilding efforts through a Multi-Donor Fund. UNOPS also supports agricultural input distribution and the Northern Crisis Recovery Project, both funded by the World Bank. In Malawi, efforts include developing Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) centres in partnership with the EU and the British Council. These initiatives reflect UNOPS’ commitment to strengthening national capacities, enhancing service delivery, and supporting progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the region.

Job Specific Context

The Partnerships Development Office (PDO) is responsible for developing strategic partnerships with key partners in the countries covered by the Multi-Country Office, and defines needs and matches partnering opportunities within the mandate of UNOPS.


Learning Opportunities

The Communications intern will play a pivotal role in supporting the PDO team, assisting with various tasks. Through hands-on experience, the intern will develop practical skills that will enhance their future career prospects. The intern will have access to the UNOPS Learning Zone Platform for skill development and will also have the opportunity to contribute innovative solutions to partnership development, leveraging their academic background.

Role Purpose

The Communications Intern supports the PDO's communication efforts by assisting with the creation, editing, and management of engaging content for digital, internal, and print platforms, and with the preparation and/or review of factsheets, presentations, press releases, and other written documents. This role also encompasses providing logistical and technical support for PDO's external events, communication and stakeholder engagements.

Content Development and Research

  • Draft, edit, and format communication materials such as briefs, fact sheets, biannual reports, press releases, stories, talking points, and short articles that are aligned with the local context, UNOPS mandates and strategies, with an emphasis on sustainability, impacts, and inclusivity.

  • Support the documentation of project milestones through written summaries, photo captions, and human-interest stories.

  • Maintain organized records of content, communication material assets, and documentation in the Google Drive for internal use.

Digital Communications and Media Support

  • Manage updates and postings on the intranet and social media platforms in line with communications guidance.

  • Support the creation and scheduling of digital content, including posts, visuals, and short multimedia materials.

  • Assist in maintaining shared digital platforms and ensuring content is up to date.

Internal Communications

  • Support internal information sharing by drafting updates, announcements, and summaries for staff and partners.

  • Assist with online participation for regional meetings, including managing links, attendance, and basic technical support.

  • Prepare concise meeting notes or summaries as needed to support follow-up and internal alignment.


Event Planning and Logistic Support

  • Support the planning and logistical coordination of virtual and in-person meetings, workshops, and events.

  • Assist with event documentation, including agendas, participant lists, photos, and post-event summaries.

  • Liaise with vendors and service providers.

Education Requirements

Required:

  • The applicant should have completed a Minimum First level university degree (Bachelor’s or equivalent), or be enrolled in a postgraduate program or have graduated from such studies within three (3) years prior to the start date of the intern assignment. The area of study preferably related to communications, journalism, public relations or similar is required. 


Experience Requirements

Desired:

  • While no prior work experience is required, some experience in content creation for social media platforms or related fields would be an asset.

  • Excellent skills in graphic design software and video editing software is desired.
