Internships

The IAEA accepts a limited number of interns each year. The internships are awarded to persons studying towards a university degree or who have recently received a degree (see Internship web pages for further details).

The purpose of the programme is\:

  • To provide interns with the opportunity to gain practical work experience in line with their studies or interests, and expose them to the work of the IAEA and the United Nations as a whole;

  • To benefit the IAEA's programmes through the assistance of qualified students specialized in various professional fields.

The duration of an internship is normally not less than three months and not more than one year.

Organizational Setting

The primary role of the Department is to administer and implement IAEA Safeguards. It also contributes to nuclear arms control and disarmament, by responding to requests for verification and other technical assistance associated with related agreements and arrangements.

The Division provides scientific and technical support to the Divisions of Operations. This includes the design, development, testing, calibration, installation and maintenance of safeguards equipment; performance and contamination monitoring of equipment; and inspection logistics.

Main Purpose

Are you passionate about AI tools and eager to apply your skills in a dynamic international organization? The Project and Engineering Section is seeking an intern to join its team and contribute to AI modelling projects.

As an intern, you would have the opportunity to work alongside experienced professionals and advance your skills by contributing to interesting and diverse tasks, including developing AI (deep learning) models and tools for the automated analysis of safeguards data and supporting their implementation into working software systems.

Functions / Key Results Expected

  • Analyse proposed use cases to apply AI for increased efficiency in data review workflows.

  • Use open-source models in ONNX format to build automated AI systems for data processing, accompanied by source code used for their development and the corresponding training/evaluation datasets.

  • Prepare performance reports for the developed models, including details of the datasets used for training and validation.

  • Perform prototype and feasibility analysis of AI models and model components.

  • Prepare datasets for model development (data selection, labelling etc.).

  • Contribute to the design and development of user interfaces.

  • Assist in the modification of existing software to integrate newly developed AI capabilities.

  • Contribute to the preparation of technical documentation for system components, particularly when integrating models into existing software systems.

  • Collaborate within the team to share progress on project developments and issues.

Qualifications and Experience

  • University Degree in software engineering or related subject (e.g. computer science, information science, etc.).

  • Basic knowledge in the design and development of automated data processing pipelines and AI-based decision support systems.

  • Practical knowledge in developing software using Python 3.

  • Practical knowledge in developing deep learning solutions for processing image data (convolutional networks).

  • Experience in one of the major AI software frameworks (e.g. PyTorch or TensorFlow) and model formats (e.g, ONNX).

  • Experience with Windows and Linux operating systems.

  • Basic knowledge of the Git version control system.

  • Hands-on mentality and fast-prototyping skills to evaluate new technologies.

Applicant Eligibility

  • Candidates must be a minimum of 20 years of age and have completed at least three years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a first degree.

  • Candidates may apply up to one year after the completion of a bachelor's, master's or doctorate degree.

  • Candidates must not have previously participated in the IAEA's internship programme.

  • Good written and spoken English essential; fluency in any other IAEA official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Spanish or Russian) an asset.
