Job Purpose:

Under the direct supervision of the Head of TEC, the Database Associate will support the design, development, administration, and continuous improvement of WFP’s database systems. The appointee will maintain high standards of data integrity, implement database best practices, support data migration initiatives, and provide technical guidance to users and colleagues. The role also contributes to documenting, optimizing, and modernizing existing and future data systems, including activities related to database server migration and integration with corporate platforms.

Key Responsibilities (not all-inclusive, nor exhaustive):

Within delegated authority and under the direct supervision of the Head of TEC, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Develop, test, and maintain database components, stored procedures, scripts, automation processes, and data models.
  • Design and optimize database schemas, including tables, indexes, keys, relationships, and normalization.
  • Troubleshoot, debug, and resolve database performance or functional issues.
  • Ensure the accuracy, consistency, and reliability of data through validation, sanity checks, deduplication, and quality‑control procedures.
  • Develop and maintain ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes to support organizational dataflows.
  • Respond to user requests, offer technical assistance, and support in reports preparation.
  • Assist in planning, coordinating, and executing database migration activities across environments (on‑premises, cloud, hybrid).
  • Implement backup, rollback, and disaster‑recovery procedures.
  • Collaborate with infrastructure teams to ensure secure, reliable, and efficient database solutions.
  • Maintain up‑to‑date technical documentation for all database solutions.
  • Perform other related duties, as required.

STANDARD MINIMUM ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Completion of secondary school education. University degree in computer science, computer engineering, information technology, or any related field.

Experience: At least six (6) years of professional experience in one or more of the following: database development, database administration, data engineering, data analysis, or software development with strong exposure to bulk data processing.

Language: Fluency in both oral and written communication in English and Arabic languages.

Required Experiences for entry into the role:

  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities with attention to detail.
  • Strong proficiency with major DBMS platforms (Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB), with primary focus on Microsoft SQL Server.
  • Excellent SQL skills, including query design, stored procedures, functions, indexing, and performance optimization.
  • Knowledge of ETL tools such as Microsoft SSIS (SQL Server Integration Services) and other ETL platforms.
  • Experience in C# and Python for automation and data-processing tasks.
  • Scripting skills in PowerShell for database automation tasks.
  • Ability to design ERDs, normalized schemas, and logical/physical database structures.
  • Experience conducting database server migrations, upgrades, and platform transitions.
  • Ability to collaborate with diverse stakeholders and communicate technical information effectively.

Desired Skills and Knowledge

  •  Familiarity with Microsoft Azure DevOps and AWS DevOps services (pipelines, repositories, CI/CD).
  • Experience using performance monitoring tools for databases like SQL Server Profiler.
  • Understanding database security best practices such as role-based access control, encryption, and auditing.
  • Knowledge of data masking, encryption standards, and user authentication mechanisms.
