Organizational Context and Scope
Under the overall supervision of the Head of Office (HoO) in Portugal, the direct supervision of the Project Coordinator (PC) and in collaboration with the project team, the Project Assistant, will be responsible and accountable for assisting the implementation of the activities that are part of IOM’s services within the Project “Rights without borders: Cooperating for human rights strengthening in immigration detention centres in Portugal”, namely by being present in immigration detention facilities in the Porto metropolitan area do deliver information sessions to migrants.
Responsibilities
Assist in the implementation and monitoring of project activities;
- Retrieve, compile, summarize, and present information/data on specific project topics;
- Draft status reports, emails, briefing notes, graphics, statistical tables, presentations and other forms of documentation;
- Support the organization of meetings, workshops and information and capacity building sessions;
- Assist the revision and application of questionnaires and interviews to migrants and professionals working within the detention context;
- Support the collection of information that ensures that the information conveyed on human rights standards is kept up to date;
- Assist with procurement and administrative issues related to project implementation, including maintenance of files and records;
- Prepare content on the project for social media;
- Travel, to implement project activities, if necessary;
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications and Experience
Education
- School diploma with three years of relevant experience; or,
Bachelor’s degree in Political or Social Sciences, Social Work, International Relations, Development Studies, Migration Studies, Human Rights, Law, Psychology or related fields from an accredited academic institution with one year of relevant professional experience.
Accredited Universities are those listed in the UNESCO World Higher Education Database.
Experience
Experience in liaising with governmental authorities, national/international institutions, United Nations agencies and non-governmental organizations;
Experience in working with migrants, refugees, internally displaced persons, victims of trafficking and other vulnerable groups; and,
- Prior work experience with international humanitarian organizations, non-government or government institutions/organization in a multi-cultural setting is an advantage.
Skills
In depth knowledge of the broad range of migration related subject areas dealt with by the Organization, specifically in the field of immigration detention, border management and migrant protection;
Experience in engaging with vulnerable population, migrants and security forces;
Ability to manage the logistic and administrative aspects of projects;
Ability to manage complex datasets;
Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is required.
Languages
All IOM staff members in all categories are required to be fluent in one of the IOM's official languages (English, French, Spanish).
For this position, fluency in Portuguese and English is required (oral and written).
Proficiency of language(s) required will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.
