Overview of position

The Satellite Infrastructure Support personnel will operate under the direct supervision of the Satellite Unit Supervisor within our client. The incumbent will assist in maintaining and supporting the satellite communication network that links the Mission with the United Nations Global Service Centre (UNGSC) and other designated locations.

Role objectives

Within delegated authority, the Satellite Infrastructure Support staff member will be responsible for the following duties:

Satellite Operations and Maintenance:

  • Plan, test, install, commission and maintain UN satellite communication systems.

  • Monitor, control, and troubleshoot VSAT network operations, including RF terminals, modems, multiplexers, and related software.

  • Install, operate, and maintain satellite earth stations, including C-band, Ku-band, and Ka-band terminals (VSAT and standard earth stations).

  • VSAT antennas ranging from 1.8m to 4.9m (Offset, Gregorian).

  • Standard terminals: 7.3m and 9.3m Cassegrain antennas.

Technical Competencies & Equipment Handling:

  • Apply working knowledge of RF components: HPAs, SSPAs, up/down converters, transceivers, LNA / LNB / LNC.

  • Operate and interpret results from technical test equipment: spectrum analysers, power meters, frequency counters and data communications test sets.

  • Support and maintain Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) and online power systems.

  • Implement Intelsat SSOG 311 line-up procedures.

  • Apply data communication protocols to ensure optimal network performance.

  • Remain available for 24/7 operations and deploy on short notice as required.

Field Installations & Infrastructure Maintenance:

  • Conduct satellite earth station installations in accordance with Intelsat and UN technical standards.

  • Install and maintain cabling (including outside plant) connecting earth stations to the IP network and other terminal equipment.

  • Maintain and operate all satellite earth station infrastructure.

Training & Support:

  • Deliver product-specific and system-specific training to users as required.

  • Provide on-call 24/7 support during critical operations, emergencies and crisis situations.

  • Perform other ICT duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Project reporting

This role reports to the Satellite Unit Supervisor.

This role has no team management responsibility.

Further information

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree or diploma in electronics, telecommunications engineering, computer engineering, computer science, information technology or a closely related field.

Certifications (Mandatory):

  • Mandatory GVF certifications: GVF500, GVF510, GVF731, GVF732, GVF733.

Certifications (Desirable):

  • ITIL Foundation certification.

  • PRINCE2 Foundation certification.

  • O3B satellite systems experience (minimum one year).

Experience:

  • At least 5 years of relevant technical experience in satellite communications, RF systems, VSAT and related ICT infrastructure.

  • Experience working with large-scale satellite earth stations and field installations is highly desirable.

Languages:

  • Fluency in English (written and spoken) is required.

Additional Requirements:

  • Computer literacy with proficiency in MS Office applications.

  • Valid national driver’s license with ability to operate a manual transmission vehicle.
