Salary:

US$ 55,163 net per annum, plus post adjustment (currently US$ 44,902). Salary is free of income tax in the United Kingdom.

Purpose for the Post

Under the direct supervision of  the senior legal officer the incumbent conducts legal research on wide range of legal topics and assists the Legal Officers in reviewing legal documents and related material.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

1. Draft documents, briefs, and background papers for the Legal Committee, Council, and Assembly, and coordinate  meetings under the purview of the  Legal Affairs Office. 
2. Conduct legal research and analysis, prepare comparative analyses, briefs, reports, and correspondence on assigned legal topics.
3. Assist legal officers in reviewing commercial contracts, Letters of Agreement, and Memoranda of Understanding, project documents, ensuring accuracy and compliance with applicable rules and policies.
4. Provide support for TC related matters within the Division, including the coordination and implementation of administrative tasks.
5. Conduct legal research and provide related assistance in connection with HR cases before UN Dispute Tribunal (UNDT) and United Nations Appeals Tribunal (UNAT).
6. Develop and maintain a database of relevant UN Tribunal jurisprudence applicable to IMO.
7. Facilitate coordination and information-sharing within the Legal Affairs Office to ensure coherent, consistent, and efficient application of procedures.
8. Provide routine legal assistance to Member States by responding to requests related to IMO’s legal instruments and procedures.
9. Respond to the recommendations provided by Joint Inspection Unit related work under the purview of the Legal Affairs Office. 
10. Handle legal-related enquiries from Governments, academic institutions, and other external stakeholders, ensuring timely and accurate responses.
11. Perform other duties related to the work of the Legal Affairs Office, as assigned.

Professional Experience

A minimum of two years of experience in legal research, drafting legal documents, and providing legal support function is essential. 

Experience working in the United Nations Common System or an international organization would be an advantage.

Education

University degree in law is essential 

Language Skills

Proficiency in English is essential. Other official languages of the United Nations will be an advantage.

Other Skills

Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications is essential.
Knowledge of SAP or other ERP is an asset

Contract Information

Fixed-term for two years (first year is probationary) with the possibility of further extension subject to satisfactory performance
