The Stuart group, led by incoming Group Leader Hannah Stuart, studies self-organisation during development and regeneration of the central nervous system using interdisciplinary approaches that span stem cell models, organoids, computational modelling and bioengineering. Our mission is to uncover fundamental principles of tissue formation and regeneration across species.

We are seeking an organised and proactive Lab Manager to support the setup and daily operations of our new group. This is a unique opportunity to help establish a new lab, shaping its infrastructure, workflows and culture from the beginning.

Your role 

This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a dynamic research environment and enjoys enabling scientific excellence and community.

In this role, you will help establish and run the new lab, covering operational as well scientific activities:

Lab Operations

  • Coordinate day-to-day laboratory activities

  • Promote safe and effective laboratory practices

  • Manage consumables, equipment, and procurement processes

  • Support budget tracking and purchasing documentation

  • Ensure compliance with EMBL health & safety policies and local regulations

Scientific Contribution

  • Collaborate with the research team and actively participate in experiments

  • Support onboarding and training of new lab members

  • Liaise with EMBL core facilities and collaborating groups

  • Participate in group meetings and planning discussions

As a new and growing group, the role will naturally evolve over time, so we are looking for someone who is adaptable and comfortable in a developing environment. The position offers the chance to contribute to cutting-edge research, with the option to pursue own project if this aligns with your interests.

You have 

We recognise that experience can be gained in different ways. If you meet most of the criteria below, we encourage you to apply.

  • A Master’s degree, ideally a PhD, in biology or a related life science field, or equivalent experience

  • Experience in lab operations and/or scientific research support

  • Experience with pluripotent stem cells

  • Strong organisational and problem-solving skills

  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities

  • Familiarity with laboratory safety and compliance standards

  • Proficiency in English (working language at EMBL)
     

You may also have

  • Experience working with mouse embryos

  • Experience in microengineering

  • Experience with imaging and image analysis

  • Knowledge of Spanish and/or Catalan

Additional Information

The Stuart Lab will open in June 2026. The preferred start date is June 2026 to support the setup phase. This role offers the opportunity to play a central part in establishing the lab’s operations and culture within a cutting-edge research environment.

Contract length: 3 years (renewable up to 9 years)
Salary:
Grade 5 or 6, depending on qualifications and experience
