Through these services the Initiative will be able to engage asset owner on climate finance, Paris alignment, and other climate action items through the Net Zero Asset Owner Alliance. The Alliance will deliver its objectives to serve nearly 90 institutional investors in their climate journey. The services will also help promote climate action into all aspects of the financial sector’s operations and services. Finally, the services will help the Initiative to broaden its outreach both within UNEP / UN and external to banks, insurers and investors, governments, regulators, private sector and multi-stakeholders, including supporting institutions.

Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The overall objective of the UNEP’s Industry and Economy Division is to encourage decision makers in government, local authorities and industry to develop and adopt policies, strategies and practices and technologies that promote sustainable patterns of consumption and production, make efficient use of natural resources, ensure safe management of chemicals and contribute to making trade and environment policies mutually supportive. It promotes the development, use and transfer of policies, technologies, economic instruments, managerial practices and other tools that assist in environmentally sound decision making and the building of corresponding activities. The United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) is the strategic partnership between the United Nations and over 500 banks, insurers and investors. For over 32 years UNEP FI has been shaping and driving the international sustainable finance agenda, setting global standards and growing a global network of leading financial institutions. Through its work-streams and regional activities, peer learning, methodology development, training and research, UNEP FI promotes sustainable finance and helps the financial industry align with and contribute to the Paris Agreement and Sustainable Development Goals. UNEP FI needs a consultant to contribute to the work of the Net Zero Asset Owner Alliance with respect to supporting work on signatory engagement and satisfaction, overall management recruitment and retention, contribution to and content development of signatory communications and marketing, advancing the regionalization strategy, progress reporting, and technical developments. Specific tasks and responsibilities The consultant will advance the following project/tasks for NZAOA Secretariat: • Revise or further develop strategies to increase recruitment including marketing, ensure signatory engagement and satisfaction at all levels, operationalize the regionalization approach, and enhance planning and experience of both in-person events and online community of practice engagements. • Work with existing secretariat team and oversee implementation of above strategies. • Oversee and review drafts of technical outputs. • Oversee development of the NZAOA progress report. • Manage cross-track implementation, accountability mechanism and delistings, final stages of the governance review, signatory engagement, recruitment strategy, implementation in regions, in-person events and online community of practice. • Development of workplan from UNEP FI side of secretariat. • Engagements with scientific advisory body and strategic advisors. • Review and contribution to internal communications, and content prepared for NZAOA’s microsite. • Review and where needed oversee global recruitment strategy implementation, reactive recruitment, engagement with regional partners, onboarding process, observer status implementation, recruitment process management, support to regional leads. Outputs and Deliverables: • Enhanced communications with signatories and improved understanding of signatory needs and satisfaction • Well organized approach and early planning for in-person events • Well implemented governance structures and procedures • Enhanced engagement of signatories in community of practice • A well-developed progress report • A clear outcome and consistent application of the accountability mechanism • Clear management of cross-track content • Technical review of output documents • Well established engagement with strategic partners and advisory bodies The consultant shall be under the overall supervision the Head of UNEP FI and report directly to the Programme Management Officer, UNEP FI and the consultant will be working in close coordination with UNEP FI’s Climate Team.

Qualifications/special skills

Education: A master’s degree in economics, finance, environmental sciences, international relations, business management or related field is required. A bachelor’s degree could be taken in lieu of master’s degree provided the selected candidate has 9 years of relevant experience. Professional Experience: At least seven (7) years working experience in finance, or climate action related roles is required.

Languages

Languages: English is the working language of UNEP FI. Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of other United Nations languages is an asset.

Additional Information

Skills & Knowledge: Excellent oral and written communications skills in English, strong interpersonal skills and ability to work within complex partnership dynamics; ability to cope with juggling multiple tasks across diverse projects in an organized and timely manner; attention to detail. Knowledge of asset owner operations and network is desirable, as is experience of managing complex operational tasks, and researching and writing. The consultant should have the ability to establish and maintain good working relations in a multicultural and geographically dispersed team working across functions. A hands-on, pragmatic approach is desirable.
