Mission and objectives

UN Women is the United Nations entity dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women. A global champion for women and girls, UN Women was established to accelerate progress on meeting their needs worldwide.

UN Women supports UN Member States as they set global standards for achieving gender equality, and works with governments and civil society to design laws, policies, programmes and services needed to ensure that the standards are effectively implemented and truly benefit women and girls worldwide.

Context

Placing women’s rights at the centre of all its efforts, UN Women leads and coordinates United Nations system efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action throughout the world. It provides strong and coherent leadership in support of Member States’ priorities and efforts, building effective partnerships with civil society and other relevant actors.

Under the overall guidance of the Country Representative and direct supervision of the Programme Specialist, the UNV Project Field Coordinator works closely with the programme and operations team, Provincial Government, UN Agencies involved in the humanitarian response and civil society to ensure the technical direction and implementation of the project and key outputs are achieved in a cost-effective and timely manner. The Project Field Coordinator will be responsible for the implementation and achievement of results under the UN Women’s Japan Supplementary Budget (JSB) project, including Outcome 1. Resilience and safety of crisis-affected women and girls are improved with increased access to emergency livelihood support and strengthened leadership capacity in emergency response. Under this outcome, the Project Field Coordinator will support the delivery of the following outputs: Output 1: 2,800 crisis-affected women and girls, including 560 women heads of households (20%), 560 adolescent mothers (20%) and 140 women with disability (5%), have improved access to emergency non-food items (NFIs) and livelihood support to help rebuild lost income sources, reduce dependency on humanitarian aid and prevent negative coping mechanisms. Output 2: Capacities of around 100 representatives of local women’s organizations and authorities are strengthened to enable women’s meaningful participation and leadership in gender-responsive emergency preparedness and response

From the perspective of advancing the Humanitarian-Development-Peace (HDP) Nexus, UN Women will engage with key humanitarian coordination structures such as the Protection, Food Security and Livelihoods (FSL) Clusters, GBV and Child Protection AoRs, leveraging UN Women’s leadership of the Gender in Humanitarian Action Working Group (GiHA WG) to promote a gender-responsive response aligned with the Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC) Gender Policy1 and inter-agency coordination efforts. The Project Field Coordinator will work closely with the Gender and Humanitarian Expert based in Pemba to support coordination with humanitarian actors, ensure the integration of gender-responsive approaches in project implementation, and facilitate engagement with cluster partners, local authorities, and women’s organizations to strengthen the participation and leadership of women and girls in humanitarian preparedness and response.

The project will also closely coordinate with the state agency responsible for coordinating the humanitarian response – the National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (INGD), development and humanitarian platforms such as the Durable Solutions Working Group led by INGD and co-chaired by three UN Agencies (IOM, UNDP, UNHCR) as well as governmental entities such as the Agency for Integrated Development of the North (ADIN), responsible for coordinating development initiatives in the north at provincial and district levels.
