Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Information Centre in Mexico, Department of Global Communications (DGC) invites you to be part of an internship Programme during the year 2026.The internship position is in UNIC Mexico City which is the primary information source of the United Nations system in Mexico, Cuba, and the Dominican Republic. UNICs are responsible for promoting a better understanding of the Secretary-General´s priorities and the impact of the United Nations´ work. In addition, UNICs lead the United Nations Country Team (UNCT) and Resident Coordination Office (RCO) communications and advocacy functions. The incumbent is under the direct supervision of UNIC Director and/or the National Information Officer (NIO). They report to the NIO of UNIC Mexico. The internship is UNPAID. The Intern must cover full-time working hours, for 6 months - 35 hours per week. With limits of delegated authority, the intern will be responsible for one or more of the following duties: -Assist in the development and implementation of a communications plan for the UN Mexico Results Report, targeting key audiences through human-interest stories, news articles, news bulletins and other public information products. -Contribute to the dissemination and promotion of the SDG Book Club, Mexico Chapter, in collaboration with key stakeholders such as publishers, authors, book clubs, schools, librarians, parents, and children. -Support the design and implementation of a plan to promote Information Integrity in Mexico, in line with UN global and country priorities. -Assist in monitoring misinformation trends in Mexico, including potential reputational risks for the United Nations. -Contribute to inter-agency initiatives aimed at combating misinformation and hate speech, including support to: Mexico’s signing of the Declaration on Information Integrity on Climate Change; and the development of a communications proposal linked to the FIFA World Cup 2026. -Support the creation and maintenance of a database of communities of practice related to the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF) and Information Integrity. -Assist in conducting a needs assessment of the United Nations Communications Group (UNCG) capacities to implement the UN Results Report and Information Integrity-related activities. -Support the development of communication tools, training materials and mechanisms to enhance cohesive and effective UN system-wide communication. -Assist in the creation of public information content for web, social media, media outlets and other key audiences, aligned with UN International Days, flagship reports and country priorities. -Perform other related tasks as required.
Qualifications/special skills
Please note that to qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or, b. Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent). Applicants must also: -Be computer literate in standard software applications. -Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter. -Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. Desirable academic backgrounds include social sciences, journalism, communications, audiovisual communications, social media manager, marketing, advertising, multimedia, or related areas. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the second to last year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), or have completed a Bachelor’s Programme. If you meet any of the above criteria, please indicate which one and attach proof to the application. Please note that you will have to provide an official certificate at a later stage. Candidates for the UN Internship Programme are required to cover the cost of travel including visa, accommodation, health insurance and other living expenses for the duration of the internship. If you have you completed a UN Internship before, please include the UN entity as well as concrete dates.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the UN Secretariat. For this position, fluency in oral and written Spanish is required. Fluency in English is desirable.

Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions.
