Duties and accountabilities:
Role Overview
The Associate Platform Engineer —reporting to the ITSDS Team Lead—will primarily support the Bank’s enterprise search ecosystem, historically rooted in on‑premises search indices, custom pipelines, and legacy application integrations. The role requires regular collaboration with platform engineers, data pipeline owners, application teams, and end users to ensure that search experiences remain performant, reliable, and aligned with business needs.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Over the past several years, as the Bank transitioned from legacy, multi‑component search pipelines toward a streamlined, cloud‑based architecture built on Databricks, Azure Search, and modern ingestion frameworks, the responsibilities naturally shifted. The emphasis moved from deep hands‑on legacy support to lighter sustaining activities, validation, and advisory input as the platform became more stable, simpler, and less operationally intensive.
Responsibilities and skills include, but are not limited to:
• Provide frontline support for on‑prem search indices, addressing issues with indexing failures, latency, data freshness, metadata ingestion, or API responsiveness.
• Troubleshoot data ingestion problems within legacy pipelines and collaborate with engineering teams to resolve workflow breaks, mapping errors, or inconsistent search results.
• Support the migration of ingestion pipelines from legacy ETL systems to Databricks‑based pipelines and Azure Search indexing, validating outputs, and ensuring continuity in search relevance and metadata quality.
• Assist downstream application teams using legacy search APIs by diagnosing performance issues, mismatches in query results, or schema discrepancies.
• Guide users and product teams through changes in search behavior as the architecture was simplified, helping them understand differences between legacy index behavior and modern cloud‑based search patterns.
• Participate in content validation, smoke testing, and quality assurance cycles during phased decommissioning of on‑prem components.
• Summarize recurring search and ingestion issues, identify root patterns, and communicate actionable recommendations to engineering teams and modernization programs.
• Provide support for user outreach, Q&A sessions, and transition communications related to search platform upgrades, index consolidations, or pipeline sunsetting activities.
• Contribute advisory insights to ongoing simplification efforts by representing user impacts, highlighting operational inefficiencies in legacy components, and validating the functional readiness of cloud replacements.
Technical Competencies:
• Strong understanding of on‑prem search index architectures, including crawling/indexing mechanisms, API consumption patterns, and content‑to‑index mapping models.
• Familiarity with traditional ETL/ingestion frameworks used to populate legacy search indices, including transformation logic, batch cycles, and failure modes.
• Working knowledge of Azure Search (or Azure Cognitive Search), including index structures, schema definitions, re‑indexing operations, and query optimization.
• Experience with Databricks pipelines and modern data processing frameworks used to simplify and consolidate ingestion flows previously spread across multiple legacy systems.
• Ability to diagnose user‑reported search issues involving ranking differences, missing results, stale data, or inconsistent metadata.
• Understanding of search‑related metadata, enrichment logic, controlled vocabularies, and indexing strategies that impact discoverability.
• Familiarity with enterprise support practices such as incident management, defect triage, issue documentation, and knowledge article creation.
• Assist developers with best‑practice development patterns, solution deployment, CI/CD pipelines, and DevOps tooling.
• Clear communication skills to help stakeholders understand architectural changes, reduce complexity, and shift from legacy dependencies to modern, cloud‑native components.
• Monitor platform health, usage trends, any anomalies, and capacity metrics, recommending improvements.
• Support project execution, documentation, knowledge transfer, and transition to operations.
• Master’s degree in computer science or related field + at least 5 years' experience OR Bachelor’s degree + at least 7 years' experience
• 5+ years of experience administering and building solutions on Microsoft technologies and cloud
• Proven experience delivering Azure Search, Azure SQL, Azure Data Lake, Databricks, Oracle, mySQL and automation solutions.
• Programming and scripting expertise (Python, Azure Functions, Power Automate, Spring Framework (Spring Boot, Spring MVC, Spring Data), Graph API, REST APIs, C#, .Net)
• Strong communication, problem-solving, and stakeholder management skills
• Ability to work within SAFe or similar Agile delivery methodologies
• Strong customer focus and ability to manage client expectations

• Microsoft Certified: Azure Developer Associate or Azure Administrator Associate (Desired)
