Project Context and Scope:

The Data & Artificial Intelligence (AI) Governance Department helps the organisation use data and artificial intelligence responsibly, securely, and for good. They shape the policies, tools, and practices that ensure data is accurate, protected, and used ethically across all our missions. Our team works at the intersection of technology, governance, and humanitarian impact, guiding how information and AI are applied to make better decisions, protect people’s privacy, and build trust in innovation.


As these are emerging disciplines, the opportunities for learning and growth can be substantial.  Being part of this team, Consultants gain hands-on experience in real-world data governance and the ethical use of AI; contributing to projects that balance innovation with accountability.

Responsibilities

Category A Consultants: Tasks to be performed under this contract:

  1. Assist in the rollout of the Data Health Scorecard initiative to build and maintain the organisation’s data inventory and create a clear view of data ownership, location, and sensitivity across the organisation. This is done by leading and supporting regional rollouts, mission support, automation innovations, updating records and collaborating with Data Custodians and Mission Focal points.
  2. Support the management of the organisational AI Registry to maintain transparency and accountability for AI systems in use across the organisation, by registering tools, verifying their risk classification, and updating related documentation.
  3. Support the monitoring of AI usage across departments to identify high-risk or unapproved tools and encourage responsible innovation, by helping analyse usage data and preparing summary insights for governance reports.
  4. Support the classification, labelling, and protection of organisational data to ensure sensitive information is securely handled in line with internal data policies by reviewing datasets, applying appropriate sensitivity labels, and verifying access permissions.
  5. Contribute to the measurement of data quality and governance maturity to help track progress against data governance benchmarks and identify improvement areas by compiling metrics and preparing visuals for dashboards and governance reviews.
  6. Help document data governance workflows and procedures to promote standardisation and transparency in data management practices by writing or refining process maps, Responsible, Accountable, Consulted, Informed (RACI) matrices, and procedure templates.
  7. Support data risk and compliance assessments to ensure that data handling practices comply with policies and regulatory frameworks by gathering evidence, summarising findings, and contributing to risk registers.
  8. Assist in preparing awareness materials and knowledge sessions on data governance to build a shared culture of data accountability and literacy by helping design presentations, newsletters, and short learning modules.
  9. Support training and awareness activities on Responsible AI to strengthen understanding and responsible use of AI tools across the organisation by helping design engaging content, case studies, or short learning videos.
  10. Conduct research on emerging Data governance and AI governance frameworks and standards to help the organisation align with evolving international best practices (e.g., EU AI Act, OECD, UN) by summarising findings into short briefs or comparative tables.
  11. Participate in governance coordination meetings to understand the end-to-end data lifecycle and support decisions across teams by recording key actions, tracking follow-ups, and supporting meeting logistics.
  12. Perform such other duties as may be assigned.

Qualifications

Education

  • University degree in Information Management, Data Science, Business Administration or a related field; or,
  • Coursework or certification in data governance, data protection, or information security is an asset;
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Purview, Power BI or similar tools is desirable.


Experience

  • Experience compiling metrics or visualization for dashboards or governance reviews;
  • Experience in the usage of office software packages (MS World, Excel, etc.) and knowledge of spreadsheet and data analysis, and;
  • Experience working in an extremely fast paced high-volume environment.

  • Exposure to supporting data classification, sensitivity labelling or access control processes;
  • Exposure to enterprise data and AI inventories, data domain registers or data management;
  • Ability to quickly learn the objectives, structures, operations and policies of a new business area;
  • Proven interpersonal skills and an ability to influence senior leaders and peers;
  • Demonstrates effective application of knowledge and understanding of project and quality disciplines;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with a diverse group, executives, managers, and subject matter experts;
  • Good organizational and administrative skills.


Languages
IOM’s official languages are English, French and Spanish. All staff members are required to be fluent in one of the three languages.

For this position, fluency in English is required (oral and written). Working knowledge of French and/or Spanish is an advantage.

Notes

IOM covers Consultants against occupational accidents and illnesses under the Compensation Plan (CP), free of charge, for the duration of the consultancy. IOM does not provide evacuation or medical insurance for reasons related to non-occupational accidents and illnesses. Consultants are responsible for their own medical insurance for non-occupational accident or illness and will be required to provide written proof of such coverage before commencing work.
