The Internship Programme aims at attracting talented students and graduates who have a specific interest in, or whose studies have covered, areas relevant to IOM programmes and activities. Interns must be between 20 and 36 years old and should have less than two years of relevant working experience. 
 
In general, the Internship Programme aims at attracting talented students and graduates who:
 
a) have a specific interest in, or whose studies have covered, areas relevant to IOM programmes and activities;
b) are holding a scholarship for internship placements in international organizations and/or for whom internship is required to complete their studies; or
c) are sponsored by governmental/non governmental institutions and/or academia to work in specific areas relevant to both IOM and the sponsor.
d) are either enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent) or have graduated in the last 12 months.
e) are between 20 and 36 years of age.
 
Background Information

The Data & Artificial Intelligence (AI) Governance unit helps the organisation use data and artificial intelligence responsibly, securely, and for good. It is responsible for shaping the policies, tools, and practices that ensure data is accurate, protected, and used ethically across all our missions. The team works at the intersection of technology, governance, and humanitarian impact, guiding how information and AI are applied to make better decisions, protect people’s privacy, and build trust in innovation.

As these are emerging disciplines, the opportunities for learning and growth can be substantial.  Being part of this team, the Interns gain hands-on experience in real-world Data Governance and the ethical use of AI; contributing to projects that balance innovation with accountability.

Supervision

Under the overall supervision of the Deputy Director DICT and direct supervision of the ICT Officer (Business Relations and Data & AI Governance) - Middle East and North Africa (MENA), the Intern - Information and Communication Technology (ICT) (Data and Governance) will assist with the following responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  1. Assist in the global rollout of the Healthy Data Scorecard initiative to build and maintain the organisation’s data inventory and create a clear view of data ownership, location, and sensitivity across the organisation by leading and supporting regional rollouts, mission support, automation innovations, updating records and collaborating with Data Custodians and Mission Focal points.
  2. Support the management of the organisational AI Registry to maintain transparency and accountability for AI systems in use across the organisation by registering tools, verifying their risk classification, and updating related documentation.
  3. Support data risk and compliance assessments to ensure that data handling practices comply with policies and regulatory frameworks by gathering evidence, summarising findings, and contributing to risk registers.
  4. Assist in preparing awareness materials and knowledge sessions on Data Governance
    to build a shared culture of data accountability and literacy by helping design presentations, newsletters, and short learning modules.
  5. Conduct research on emerging Data Governance and AI governance frameworks and standards to help the organisation align with evolving international best practices (e.g., EU AI Act, OECD, UN)

  6. Perform such other duties as may be assigned.
Learning Objectives
  1. Improved collaboration in Data Governance and able to create simple presentations, newsletters, and learning modules;
  2. Research emerging data and AI governance standards and summarise insights into short briefs or comparison tables;
  3. Updating data inventory records and coordinating with missions and Data Custodians;
  4. Conducting risk and compliance reviews by collecting evidence and summarising key findings for risk registers to support Data Governance;
  5. Researching and summarizing emerging data and AI governance standards and insights into short briefs or comparison tables.

Training Components and Learning Elements

The Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Intern (Data and Governance) will gain experience in working in an international multicultural environment, within the United Nations System.

  • Gain experience in organization, management, and international cooperation activities;
  • Gain a better understanding of International Organization for Migration (IOM’s) work, as an inter-governmental organization in the field of Migration, and work on formulating and editing institutional strategies, priorities and workplans;
  • The Intern can also access online training courses at the disposal of all IOM staff;
  • The Intern will have the possibility to interact with IOM staff within Headquarters and IOM Missions.
     

Qualifications

Education

  • Current university student or recent graduate (within one year) in Information Management, Data Science, Business Administration, or a related field;. and,
  • Coursework or certification in Data Governance, Data Protection, or Information Security is an asset.

Experience

  • Experience compiling metrics or visualizations for dashboards (beneficial);
  • Experience in the usage of office software packages (MS Word, Excel, etc.) and knowledge of spreadsheet and data analysis; and,
  • Conceptual knowledge to enterprise data and AI inventories, data domain registers, or data management.

Skills

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Purview, Power BI, or similar tools is desirable;
  • Good analytical skills and attention to detail;
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines;
  • Good interpersonal and communication abilities;
  • Good knowledge of MS Office;
  • Ability to work in a multicultural environment and maintain a professional attitude;
  • Demonstrated organizational and time‑management skills;
  • Adequate knowledge of the broad range of migration related subject areas dealt with by the Organization; and,
  • Working knowledge of UN and bilateral donor programming.

Languages

IOM’s official languages are English, French, and Spanish.

For this position, fluency in English is required (oral and written).

Working knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, and Spanish) is an advantage.

a) have a interest in, or whose studies have covered, areas relevant to IOM programmes and activities; 
b) are either enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent) or have graduated in the last 12 months.

Depending on experience and location, interns are granted a small monthly stipend to help offset costs. Interns benefiting from an internship allowance or scholarship granted by his/her university or other sponsoring body that includes financial remuneration or credits for coursework will not be eligible for the stipend.

IOM covers Interns against occupational accidents and illnesses under the Compensation Plan (CP), free of charge, for the duration of the assignment. IOM does not provide evacuation or medical insurance for reasons related to non-occupational accidents and illnesses. Interns are responsible for their own medical insurance for non-occupational accident or illness and will be required to provide written proof of such coverage before commencing work.
