The Global Crop Diversity Trust is seeking an outstanding candidate for the position of:

Scientific Advisor

Reporting to the Director of Science and Programs, the Scientific Advisor will serve as a coordinator of the Crop Trust’s engagement in the Global Conservation Consortium for Food Plants (GCCFP) and support the initiative at large. The position will play a key role in shaping the long-term planning of the GCCFP, contributing to its strategic vision, and strengthening its positioning within the international agricultural research and development landscape. As part of the Global Conservation Consortium for Food Plants (GCCFP), of which the Crop Trust is a founding member and serves on the steering committee, the position will contribute to the consortium’s strategic development and overall functioning. The GCCFP is hosted by the New York Botanical Garden (NYBG), which coordinates its day-to-day activities, and operates in close collaboration with Botanical Gardens Conservation International (BGCI), the Secretariat of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA), and other key partners.

The responsibilities of the position include the following:

  • Within the framework of the Global Conservation Consortium for Food Plants (GCCFP), the position will contribute to shaping long-term priorities, guiding strategic initiatives, and supporting the overall vision for conserving and sustainably using plant genetic resources for food and agriculture (PGRFA). The role will help strengthen alignment and collaboration between genebanks and botanical gardens, while contributing to the positioning and effectiveness of the global conservation system in the international research and development landscape.
  • More broadly, the position holder will strengthen linkages and partnerships between agricultural research/genebank organizations, botanic garden organizations, and other relevant sectors, to further develop the global system of ex situ conservation of PGRFA.
  • Activities of the position holder will include development and implementation of relevant information, data systems, and data sharing; integrated conservation of plant genetic resources; sustainable use of plant genetic resources and promotion of opportunity food plants; capacity sharing and knowledge exchange; outreach and communications; and policy and governance.
  • The position will strengthen the Crop Trust’s project development efforts by proactively and creatively identifying, shaping, and advancing new project opportunities with a diverse range of partners, in close alignment with programs, external affairs, and other relevant Crop Trust teams.
  • The position will also contribute to liaising with the Crop Trust’s U.S.-based stakeholders and potential funders more generally - and as relevant - to explore and develop funding opportunities.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience

  • Master's degree in biological/agricultural sciences, and of relevance to the plant genetic resources area.
  • At least 7 years of experience in working with plant genetic resources  
  • Experience in resource mobilization would be an asset
  • Solid experience in project management
  • Analytical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Creative and collaborative mindset
  • Dynamic, self-motivated and focused with a proactive approach
  • Strong work ethic, good judgment and ability to manage own time
  • Willingness to travel internationally
  • Fluency in English required, and proficiency in other relevant languages would be an asset

Terms and Conditions: The Crop Trust offers an attractive remuneration package including a competitive salary, non-contributory retirement savings plan, medical insurance and leave provisions. This is a Professional position classified as Level 4, with Level 6 being the highest. The salary range for Level 4 starts at Euro 55,000. All benefits are denominated and paid in Euros. Staff of the Crop Trust (including German nationals) are exempt from host country income tax. Relocation costs are covered for candidates residing outside of the Bonn/Cologne or surrounding areas. The initial contract will be for a period of 12 months, subject to a probationary period of 6 months.
