Context
The International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) is an intergovernmental organization of 35 member states, with a mission to support sustainable democracy worldwide through policy-relevant knowledge, capacity development, advocacy, and the convening of dialogues.
The Institute pursues this mission by developing, sharing and enabling the use of comparative knowledge to reform-makers, combining research, global knowledge tools, and technical assistance to support democratic reform and influence policies and politics at the national and global level.
Our work focuses on the six workstreams: Electoral Processes, Constitution‑Building and the Rule of Law, Political Participation and Representation, Democracy Assessment, Digitalization and Democracy, Climate Change and Democracy. We also address gender equality, inclusion and money in politics as they relate to democracy.
The Digital Communications Officer coordinates and enhances digital content and multimedia communications across all teams and offices to strengthen the organization’s online presence. The post holder works closely with headquarters and regional teams to gather information, prioritize content, and stay ahead of relevant news and events.
They are responsible for writing, editing, visualizing, and targeting content to promote the organization’s key issues, events, and resources. Their primary focus includes multimedia storytelling, outreach, social media, website management, and digital advocacy campaigns, as outlined in International IDEA’s Communications Strategy. The post holder also provides global support in line with the Unit’s priorities and operational needs.
Duties and Responsibilities
Provides communications and media support to the organization’s events and coordinates technical areas, broadcasting and livestreaming event promotion;
Coordinates and educates regional communications staff with the aim to decentralize communications;
Serves as one of the team’s content editors. Writes and edits articles, and other outreach content; including digital storytelling packages;
Serves as the coordinating content editor on all social media platforms. Writes social media posts, creates social media toolkits and social media visual cards. Supports with the inception of digital advocacy campaigns and leads efforts for their implementation.
Creates clear infographics and digital assets for use online and in presentations;
Creates compelling and informative videos that present the organization’s work and results. Reviews and edits outsourced video projects and supports coordination with external media agencies;
Serves as the in-house video editor, managing video production, editing, and livestreaming activities, and determining when external services are required to support delivery;
Creates International IDEA’s podcast series and serves as the in-house audio editor with good technical skills in Adobe Suite;
Serves as the in-house visual designer with good technical skills and editing in Adobe Photoshop or InDesign;
Implements International IDEA’s social media strategy for all social media channels (Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube);
Reviews and updates the organization’s social media guidelines as needed. Schedules created or provided posts from the programme and communications teams in a timely manner and ensures balance in thematical and regional representation;
Monitors and reports on social media impact and analytics as requested;
Regularly attends select programme team meetings to stay well-informed about planned activities, upcoming events and campaigns; Proactively identifies key counterparts across programme teams to facilitate information sharing;
Keeps up with development of AI tools to improve the efficiency and quality of communication outputs.

Education and Experience
University degree in communications, journalism, international relations or a related subject;
A minimum of five (5) years of professional experience, including substantial internships, as a journalist or writer in communications for development, with a focus in social media and preferably in an international context;
Strong graphic design and multimedia production skills, including expert knowledge of video equipment, livestreaming, and editing in Adobe Premiere, with proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (e.g. InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro);
Experience in producing digital content, including social media assets, video and/or audio content;
Experience with the use of AI communication tools;
Experience supporting digital events or multimedia production;
Experience of working in an international context, e.g. in an intergovernmental organization, considered an advantage;
Fluency in written and oral English is required. Knowledge of Spanish, Arabic, Swedish, or French (written and oral) would be an asset.
Terms of Contract:
Local Post.
Fixed term appointment for two (2) years.
Remuneration - SEK 39 485 NET per month
Please note as this is a local post, International IDEA will bear no costs relating to the relocation of the selected candidate to the duty station. This position is open to those legally authorized to live and work in Sweden for the duration of the contract. International IDEA is not able to support work permit applications.
