Danish Refugee Council (DRC) is a leading protection agency with a mandate to protect, advocate and promote durable solutions for displacement affected populations. 

DRC has been operating in Ukraine since 2014, currently DRC employs over 800 staff in Ukraine and will continue to implement humanitarian response in the Protection, Livelihoods, Shelter/NFIs and Humanitarian Disarmament and Peacebuilding (humanitarian mine action) sectors, using direct interventions, support to duty bearers and civil society organizations (CSOs), and partnerships with CSOs. DRC will continue and adapt its durable solutions portfolio to the evolving context.

DRC is currently looking for an Emergency Assistant based in Shostka, Ukraine.

About the job:

Under the supervision of the Emergency Officer and technical guidance of the Emergency Specialist, the Emergency Assistant supports the implementation of emergency assistance activities in Shostka raion.

As the sole Emergency team member in the location, the role requires close collaboration with other DRC sectors (Protection, Shelter, HMA) and local partners to ensure an integrated and coordinated response. The position plays a key role in field presence, community engagement, referrals, and service mapping.

Your main duties and responsibilities will be:   

Programming & Implementation:

  • Support the implementation of emergency assistance activities (cash, NFIs, winterization) in line with workplans and guidance from the Emergency Officer.
  • Participate in needs assessments, beneficiary registration, and field missions across communities.
  • Identify vulnerable individuals and households and support appropriate targeting in coordination with relevant teams.
  • Assist in the preparation of documentation for distributions and beneficiary payments.
  • Support the implementation of activities in coordination with other DRC sector teams present in the area.

Coordination and Integration

  • Work closely with Protection, Shelter, and HMA teams to support integrated programming and joint field activities.
  • Participate in joint field visits and assessments with other sectors to identify needs and vulnerable populations.
  • Support coordination with local partners implementing activities in the area, ensuring alignment and information sharing.
  • Contribute to joint planning of activities, locations, and beneficiaries in coordination with relevant teams.
  • Regularly share field observations, needs and coordination updates with the Emergency Officer to support decision-making.

Referrals and Service Mapping

  • Facilitate internal referrals between DRC sectors to ensure beneficiaries access appropriate services.
  • Support external referrals to local service providers and partners.
  • Contribute to the mapping and regular update of available services and actors in the area.
  • Support follow-up of referral cases when required.

Community Engagement and AAP:

  • Engage with beneficiaries and community members in a respectful and culturally appropriate manner.
  • Ensure beneficiaries receive clear information about activities, timelines, and assistance provided.
  • Support the collection of feedback and complaints in line with Accountability to Affected Populations (AAP) principles.
  • Build trust with communities through regular presence and communication.

Data & Documentation:

  • Collect and record accurate data on beneficiaries and activities.
  • Ensure proper documentation and filing of Means of Verification (MoVs).
  • Support secure storage and confidentiality of beneficiary data.
  • Maintain updated trackers and lists as required.

Logistics & Field Support:

  • Support the organization of field missions and distributions.
  • Assist in handling and distribution of NFIs.
  • Ensure proper documentation of delivered assistance.

About you

To be successful in this role we expect you to have minimum 1 year of practical experience in sector area working for an NGO. Moreover, we also expect the following: 

Required:          

  • Relevant university degree (e.g. political science, international development, or economics) or equivalent professional qualification. 
  • Previous experience in field activities (registrations, distributions, or community engagement)
  • Basic understanding of data collection and documentation processes
  • Ability to communicate effectively with beneficiaries and community members
  • Strong sense of responsibility and attention to detail
  • Ability to follow procedures and work under supervision
  • Fluency in local language
  • Good knowledge of MS Excel and data entry tools

Desired:

  • Experience working with vulnerable populations
  • Familiarity with basic humanitarian principles (AAP, protection, inclusion)
  • Basic English is an asset

  • Contract length: 6 months renewable depending on performance and subject to funding
